Updating Website

    • Hello,

What is the best way to upgrade a simple website to a Joomla Website without taking the old site down. In other words I would like to build a Joomla Site with content and minimize the downtime of the actual site. (I don't want to erase everything, install the site and start building it from scratch while it's viewable by everyone).

      Thanks,

      Liam

    • There are a few ways to do this.

Of course, you don't want to be working on a live site...

      A))

Using JoomlaPack, back up your current site, then install it on your localhost or in a folder on your server as a development site.

You'll have to create a new database and run the install.

Apply the new template to the development site, move your content around to match the new templates layout.

When you are finished, back up the development site using JoomlaPack.

Back up the old site, too.

In your servers root directory, delete the old Joomla site, upload the files from the development site, and run the install.

      B))

Install the template with the Rocket Launcher or apply it to a fresh install of Joomla on your localhost or in a folder on your server as a development site, copy and paste the content from the old site to the new one.

When you are finished, use the procedures mentioned above to move the site from localhost or from the development folder to the root.
