building a webdesign agency around rocket (or other) templates

  • building a webdesign agency around rocket (or other) templates

    • I was wondering if there are people out here that build a webdesign agency around the customizing of rockettheme templates. I have created websites for years but since discovering joomla and rockettheme (and joomlart to be honest) there's a whole new way of creating websites. And with the help of some good templates it's not difficult to build awesome websites.
But to make money out of that, I wonder if that's an option.
I'm thinking of how to bring that on my site. Can you say something like 'we use high quality templates and customize them to the customers needs' or something like that?
I hope that yoyu can give me some example webdesign stores that use templates from rockettheme.

      thanks,
      Sander

    • companies use templates all the time. Templates are just design originals that you customize. Use the original image and edit it to what you think your customer might want then offer it to them. You can obviously let them know its a derivitive from a template but for some reason that has a bad ring to it for most clients. They think Cookie Cutter and template go hand in hand. Fact of the matter is that if you look at any design company they use a template or dont use joomla. I would personally suggest not mentioning that you use a template cause people get scared theres gonna be fifty five more duplicates out there and they want the only one.

Heck its a hassle sometimes explaining joomla to people they think since its free open source then that means its junk...cause its free. like im paying for HTML or something.

Let people sit where they are comfortable. If they want to know where you got your idea tell them RT was your base then shwo them the migration but if they dont ask then leave them be. ((WARNING)) If your idea of customizing is to change the logo with photoshop and have it not match and then just leave it. Then you best tell them, cause they just might find there site somewhere else. That being said if its not gonna look anything like the original then whats the point in showing it to them? Just show them your work, if they think its too expensive then tell them you can use a High Quality premade template from RT, but i wouldnt throw that out there if your gonna try and make some loot from customizing it.

What do you other guys think? Is that your experience as well?

    • It is possible to build a business around customizing joomla templates. One thing you need to be aware of are the terms and conditions of use for the templates so you don’t run into problems. A good way to do this if you don’t want to shell out the cash for the Pro membership is to get the customer to buy the templates themselves. If you set up a RT affiliate account you can earn some $ for referring them as new template club members too.

    • Maybe this post needs to be moved to a non-public location.

I refer to Joomla as a mature CMS.
No need to mention Joomla or open source unless they ask for details.

I refer to templates as "Website Layouts" and will show a client some "layouts" with a demo site.

I don't think it is a good idea to have a customer "buy" a template subscription and then have to go from there.
You can easily wrap the yearly cost of the PRO membership into one website build - interview your client and give them some demos.

Your customization of the template is were you make your money. If you host sites - included the hosting costs in the build. Always a good idea to give the customer a nice "package"...you can also use this as a deliverable.

      My $2.00 :)

    • I actually get a lot of requests in for template customization work - not just RT themes, but other too. It's not a primary business for me though, but I do get quite a few to do.

Most who approach me already have purchased the template (they've normally tried it out already), if not I just refer them to a membership or individual purchase. If they have to pay for it, they may as well get the perks that come with a membership. I'd just purchase on their behalf otherwise (or if it were a full site dev, just flex my pro membership).

Why be coy about Joomla? I openly disclose the system to clients and all over my website. Its a good business generator I think.

It really depends on the client.
I find it is easier to say "I will deploy your site with a CMS" within a quote then explain Joomla etc.
I don't try to hide it but I don't use it really as a selling point unless I think the client understands it.

The demo sells itself if I get to that point. :)

    • Both good points Dan and Joseph make. It really depends on the client.
In my neck of the woods most peoples eyes just glaze over when you start explaining what content management is.

This has been my experience so far regarding most clients.
Although once in a while you do get a technically savvy client that knows what they want, what you offer, and are eager to begin "logging in" and grabbing the beast by the horns........

    • most people in my opinion feel like they are being ripped off when you charge for "free software" i hate explaining that to people so i just dont mention it. they want deals and stuff and It's just a hassle so i circumvent the thing by not even telling them its a CMS unless they can wrap their minds around it. But if they get the benefits then i sell them those benefits liek a mad man. But theres no point in explaining why medicine cures syphilis and what ingredients are in it, cause they just dont care, they just want to know that the medicine works and will do its job. thats what i tell them and show them and they are happy.

Peopel care more about results then what version of HTML or PHP your using. so i dont go there. Just tell them they get a site then make them happy. But you cant have them jump on your site and them be liek this looks just liek these guys site. If you cant customize then mention you cant make original looking stuff cause theres nothign worse then seeing someone fall all over themselves trying to explain why theirs looks just like another guys.

Took some template samples into a client and they had the template sample i was showing for a site they were using. It didnt go well cause it was from an ad agency and it was big $$$$$$$$.
Thats what i was trying to get to.
