Disillusioned

    • After spending many hours I am Disillusioned with joomla and in particular the rocket Theme templates I purchased.

I'm afraid that I can't recommend these templates or Joomla to anyone. If you're not an expert in html you're stuffed.

    • Not that I want to argue, but you think there are other templates out there that are easier to set up?
And what about joomla and other cms -yes you need to have some level of knowledge to use it.

    • Had you of started with, say, DotnetNuke, I suspect you would take a different position like the millions of other users, sir. ;)

Why do you need to know html to use Joomla? Sure, it helps to have a basic command of html and css, but I am not sure how you arrived at your "If you're not an expert in html you're stuffed" conclusion.

You need some help getting started? Ask away....

    • Moreover, I always say that access to these forums, in and of themselves, are well worth the price of RT membership. The templates are just icing on the cake.

You could be a master html/css/joomla guru if you rolled up your sleeves and combed the forums for a little while....food for thought. ;)

    • You're right. I am obviously frustrated and I did write that when I was really frustrated. I guess it's more the template more than Joomla itself that's causing the issues. I'm not even sure it's installed correctly as some of the features in the editor (I have seen in tutorials) aren't present.

I could look at another template but I like the Meridian. It's just that I didn't realise it was going to be so difficult to a) install and b) to get content into it where I want it.

Having slept on it I'm not giving up and any help will be appreciated.

    • Retired, but build and run websites for organisations of school leaders and others - e.g. http://www.icponline.org, http://www.aspa.asn.au, http://www.appa.asn.au

    • Tell us the exact features that are missing from the editor that you have seen in the tutorials, and where do you want to put the content. I know that there are people here who will be able to help you work through any problems.

I know very little about html and even less about css, but I have been working with RT templates for a few years now, and I've had excellent help through these forums.

    • Alan I think you were probably trying to run before you could walk. When I first learnt Joomla I did not have a PC and was going up the local library using a Fantastical install from a Web Host cPanel. I did have a very basic knowledge of HTML but CSS was way over my head. I gave up 3 times before It clicked 1 day. Just give it time. 8)

    • ...and I would be the first to admit that the whole 'sections, categories, uncategorized' nonsense is unintuitive, to say the least, but it will 'click' one day. Getting my head around that was the hardest hurdle to clear. ;)

Any specific questions with which we can help?

      [edit]

And I found early on that installing the rocket launcher packs, then totally dissecting them to figure out how they populated they site, was the easiest way to learn. You can slowly replace the stock content with yours, then remove all the content that is not used...helps you learn your way around the backend and how to place content where you want it, how the menu items are setup, module positions, module variations, etc, etc...

    • Thanks everyone for your encouragement.

I have installed the Afterburner template as an interim step to get my content up and running.

In the meantime I'm going to install Meridian on my desktop and do as you suggest.

I will ask the questions when I get stuck.

Onnce again thanks for your help and you will be hearing from me. :)

      Cheers

      Alan, don't despair!

Moving from a stock install of Joomla to a club template RT or otherwise is quite a leap.

If you don't have a basic grasp of Joomla, let alone some HTML/CSS skills, in the beginning, it can be overwhelming.
