Please help with suggestions, for template and scroller

Posted 15 years 1 month ago
    • The design is basically very simple. I Just need to find out which is the most uncomplicated template(and a relatively new one, cause I had trouble with using dimensions early which had tables with "faux columns")

But the main problem what I want to know is can Rockstories or any other image scroller (or any image gallery script) be used to achieve this portfolio kind of desgin

      Screens below
This image is hidden for guests.
Please log in or register to see it.

Or even tell me if this navigation system is just too complicated to create, Would it be better if I dumped the scroll effect and rather it went to a new page when I click on the scroll button or thumbnail,
My JavaScript/Ajax skills are very limited(only copy paste), HTML, php and css I can get anything done.

      Thanks

    • No replies :( .
Is this forum not active as it was before, or is there some kind of a unwritten rule. I hope my question is ok.
Or is this too much to ask, how do you put it.
Its like, is this too much to ask as in is this something I should be doing on my own, is that the reason no one is replying.
I was just hoping that those who would have worked on such simple sites might know which template works the best and would just save other(me) time.
      Thanks

    • I saw this post the day you posted, for lack of a better response or no response at all...

The forums are as active as ever. However, RT template specific questions take priority over 'I need advice (picking a template / extensions)' type of posts.

The type of questions you are asking are a bit hard to answer because it really boils down to a matter of personal taste, the over all design of the templates, what Module position each template has, the extension and functions they have, and what 3rd party components if necessary, would be needed.

Many of the RT templates have some sort of scroller feature at the top of the page as shown on the upper part of your screen shot.

However, I've not seen 'Zoom out cursor action for all thumbnails' in out templates as you've described in the lower half of the screen shot. (Perhaps I'm misinterpreting what you want to do.) For that, you may need some 3rd party component, or maybe RokBox would do what you want...

What I suggest, or think what you really need to do is take a look at the demos and see if one closely matches what you want to do.

After that, install a copy of the Rocket Launcher with the Sample Data on a dev site on your local host or a sub directory of your site and experiment.

You mention wanting to make a 'simple site' also keep in mind that any template can be as simple as you want it.

The demos are packed with sample content, but remember, if you have minimal content, all Module positions are collapsible and won't display, so your site will be very simple and clean.

Some of the older template are quite nice but recently I've enjoyed working with the newer Gantry based templates, the past five, from December '09 to present.

Perhaps one of those would suit your needs?

    • Thanks for the Reply JEM.
I have been going through the template demos. I have also installed 5 demos and experimented with them. But what I have found is that to achieve what I want I have almost create the template from a scratch.
The newer templates look more complicated and have too many options and scripts being loaded.
I have to also disable those scripts(php functions) as they are no needed anymore.
That means more editing some of these script files have more than one function, so I simply cannot disable them.
I think it is my mistake that I did not define simple. Simple means that has no frills and no extra scripts(that I am not going to use anyways).
Last time I had used a simple template and it turned out to have tables.(the tables were used for "faux columns" which I never used).
Right now I seem to have two options either use quasar or versatility. I have seen many a simple sites being done on versatility. Just wanted to know if it is "up to date". Are there any issues with it that you(anyone) would like to warn me of(with versatility and quasar)
      Thanks

    • If you are looking for something simple and fast and are going to have a limited amount of positions, Versatility 4 is still one our most popular templates. (And because it's so popular, the V4 forum is full of tips and tweaks.) I really don't see any issues with using it even though it's 'old'.) If you can get your site laid out 'within the limits' of its Module positions 45 vs 60 in Quasar, that might be a good choice.

Quasar is nice if you want to have the Gantry framework.

Though it only has 18 Module positions, Afterburner is another template to take a look at if the positions suit your proposed layout as it's the fastest Joomla template around.

So, I'd narrow it down to those three and then make a decision.
