Recommendation for XML generator?

    • What do you guys use to update/create the XML file for a template--especially if you've made major remodeling and restructuring changes to one of the fantastic RTTC templates?

Andy: what do you use to create the original one? Is there a trick, tool?

Joomlart has one, but I'm not running a local server as required for their tool. Anyone?

Gollum: maybe you can't tell by my Sharpie marker with a mind of it's own; but I'm not an idiot. I moderate on forums in various corners of the web, and I understand the concept of a search engine. For criminitly's sake, my Uncle Al invented the ding-dang internet. Now, if you had included a link to google with keywords intact, like www.google.com/search?q=joomla+template+xml+generator I would have labeled you as helpful. But in the absence of such effort, I must label you as insulting.

For the record, said google search only results in multitudeness of links that link to references to Joomlart's generator, with one exception. If you had spent the couple of hours I had digging around the internet (before coming to my family here to ask for help)--you would have found that Joomlasolutions also has a XML generator that installs as a component. It however seems to have fallen by the way-side as it is no longer listed anywhere on their site. If you can dig through the archives of the old joomlaforge and can find it (as I did), you would find that it doesn't work. Now... one could ask why I didn't just install a window's web services emulator so I could run the PHP files for the Joomlart generator--it probably would have taken less time?!?!? Good question-- simply because I believe there has to be a simpler, better mouse trap.

So, let me restate my question. Does anyone have a utility to create a Template XML file (besides Joomlart's toy)? Is everyone creating the XML files for Joomla by hand? Or IS Joomlart's the only mousetrap?

    • well, there's a php xml builder in the versatiltiy II template. Works for me - I presume it's from Andy.

Amazing what goodies you find in the templates :)

    • I've only ever used JA's solution and its excellent.

Using a localhost development environment is surely a must with template development...I can only imagine the tedium of trying to do many updates over the interweb. Yuck.

    • Thanks for the tip Gareth, that xml generator sits in the Carbonation template as well. I wondered what it was. Will give it a go the next time I need to zip a template.

      Mr. Gamber,
I did the same google search 2 days ago and like you mentioned there were thousands of results. I only skimmed the first page and found two, the yumlaat one your mention and another one(I cannot for the life of me recall what it was called). However, they both required a local server to run on.

I ended up editing the xml file manually.

I referred you to google figuring that you could probably find what you needed amongst the other 100,000 results I didn't bother looking through.

It was silly of me to assume you had not googled before posting the question here and I offer you my sincerest apologies. No offense was intended.

    • Heh... well, thanks for the apology. I didn't expect one. I replied to your perceived sarcasm with my own--so let me apologize also. I was trying to sound humorous, but my frustration with having manually edited a xml file and then proceeding to overwrite it must have shone through.

Gareth gets my props award for pointing to the buildxml.php file!!! woohoo, worked like a charm. Actually there's a slightly different version (I think just one line commented out) in the mobius directory as well--but I think the versatility2 version worked cleaner. Created a backup and whatall.

      Nice widget!
