well I am not sure if this is the right place to put this but I will post it here anyway; if the mods want to move it no big thing.
I have an idea for a website but I want to post it here to get some feedback and some ideas about how to make it happen. Here is the kind of feedback I am looking for. I basically want to know how you would use joomla to make it happen.
So tell me
• What extensions you would use.
• How you would use these extensions.
• How would you make some of the features work.
The Idea.
I live in the Caribbean and I want to create a web directory similar to yellowpages.com for my island. We have a yellow pages in our phone book but the accompanying website is very bad. So I was think of using tags for each item or entry. So we can use those tags to do the searches. Here are some things that I would like to do with this site:
• I would like that when you search for lets say a lawyer in my country on Google. I would like one of the top hits to be from my site. When you select the hit you go to a search of the lawyer tag. Not sure if that’s possible.
• I would may to have two search boxes. The first for the tags you want to find and the next is a location. So you can search for lawyer in lets say Basseterre
• I would also like for customers to update their own items lets say to change details like phone numbers or addresses and other details
• I would also like some sort of map integration. Maybe Google maps or something.
When I think about more ideas I will let you know.

Basically, you only need one extension for most of the things you want....
do a search for SOBI2, it's the best business directory component...and pretty much anything is possible with it. It might take a little bit of time to understand how it works....but there is 1000's of extensions just for SOBI2 to make it useful in lots of ways...so likely it will help you.
When you want to appear at the top of google for seaches....that is nothing to do with the site itself...it is the work you put into your search engine rank....you would need to put alot of time into gaining links to your site....and using SEO extensions on the website, to make all the addresses "friendly"....ie.....website.com/directory/lawyers rather than website.com/com_component?13_etc you se what I mean....this is a small part of the whole process you need to do to make your website come up at the top of google. It all depends on how competitive it is, and whether you can make your page/website relevant to the search people are making. There are tools you can use, to research all the links that the current top of google has to their site...then you can go and get those links to.
Hope it gives you something to think about..you have much to learn I think before you fully understand what to do...but we all do, and you have to start somewhere ! Get reading! Good Luck - www.cityinsurance.co.uk
