uploading from "localhost" to remote server

Posted 15 years 2 weeks ago
    • I have built a site based on a Rockettheme template on XAMP/localhost. Now I need to ftp the site to my remote server. I'm not having much luck with that. If I just ftp what is in htdocs nothing seems to work. I can't find any posts dealing with this so am looking for a reference to a post or some advice.

      Thanks

      Tim

No problem, I understand you want to get up and running ASAP.

      Did the info help?

If of if not, let's keep the thread running here, we'll try to get you sorted.

    • The akeeba backup worked amazingly. I now have the site up and running. I'm going to keep developing the site using Xampp on my local device, them update the live site using Akeeba. Does that sound like a reasonable way to work?

You have been VERY helpful. Again, thank you so much.

    • Once you move the site to the live server, it's best to continue on the live server.

Usually you wait to make the move until you are 80% finished and go from there.

If you keep working locally, every time you want to update, you'd need to go through the whole backup process again, which would mean deleting all the files on the live site, clearing the database and running the install again with the new backup.

It's really not a practical way to do things if you add five article to your localhost and want to update the live site wiping it clean to update some Articles.

What you can do is run regular backup on the live site as you work.

E.g., if you add 10 Articles, at the end of the day, run a backup and you will be safe up to the point you backup.

If something should happen, you can then restore the site.

Akeeba is also good to use prior to making any major changes, before installing a 3rd party component etc.

If the component doesn't work, you can revert to a copy prior to the install which sometimes works better than simply uninstalling the component because sometimes uninstalling a component does not remove everything.

On a side note, testing 3rd party components should never be done on a live site; always use localhost to test, and when you are satisfied, make the changes to the live site.

E.g., many members want to add a gallery component, or a form component, but with so many available it's hard to choose.

Working on local host, you could install a few gallery or form components and see which one suits your needs, and after testing install only the one(s) you want on the live site.
