With HTML, there's no 'carriage return' only <b></b> and <p></p> tags to break a line or start a new line / paragraph.
What captions are you talking about?
A specific template / Article / Module / Component, etc... - Thanks,

Hi JEM
When a picture is placed the description can be designated a caption. An extra long description ends up in a long line caption pushing surrounding body copy away from the picture and caption.

If you are having a problem with a specific template, the best place for support is in the template specific forum.
Are you talking about placing an image in an Article, are you having trouble with a particular extension, or 3rd party component?

JEM this is not specific to any template and really is a general Joomla issue. When placing an image in an article using the "Image" button at the bottom left of the edit screen, I am able to designate a "Title" as a caption by selecting the radio button "caption". What I'd like to have happen it have the caption flow over two lines directly under the image once placed.
The following link shows what I get for the image top right on my page. Not pretty. Sorry for the newbie question.
