Try enabling RokGZipper. I'd go that route first. If you have FireBug, then install YSlow and it will give you some other suggestions like configuring etags and add expires headers.

- I just tried your website. For me, the slow part was waiting for the host to respond. The website loaded fast once that happened.

- Friend uploaded it to a different server to test it and it still loads slowly. So I'm assuming it's probably caused by the chat script...

Like Rich said, go through it with YSlow and see where you can cut out some size; for example:
Smushed 20.40% or 68.06 KB from the size of your image(s). How did we do it? See the table below for more details.
The RT header and footer graphics alone are almost the size of the chat js file...400K (more than half the size of the whole front page) between those 2 graphics and the chat.
...but once cached, it's not too bad at all.

- Well I looked on FireBug and apparently the Twitter module is the larger problem. Is there anything I can do to cut back on the Twitter resources?

- I've removed the live chat script. Can I change the image formats to make the page even smaller? And if so, what images should I change and what to what format?

John do you have y slow installed along with firebug?
If so,after you get your grade, click on tools, and then scroll down to where it has smush.it
That will tell you what images can be made smaller and by how much. It will even do the work for you.
