Always errors - is it my ISP?

I have constant problems installing templates or extensions, or things like the JCE Editor which is a nightmare to get installed. etc.
Sometimes it works OK another day but it is impossible to work like this wasting time.
I install from the zip, upload and then try to install from the /tmp
Is this common because maybe Joomla is huge and slow and that's life, or is it the server. I am with Hostsforweb and your advice would be most welcome.
