Am I in over my head?

Posted 15 years 1 week ago
    • I am fairly new to Joomla, but I get it, just not a pro yet. I really like the templates here and I can see where with some modifications I can get it to work just like I want for my Camera Club (non-profit).

I first tried the free theme "Crystalline" and installed the theme and the RocketLauncher. So, before going any further, I decided to join and learn on the template I was going to be using. So . . .

I purchased a 60 day membership, downloaded Infuse . RocketLauncher was already installed and so I installed the file "rt_infuse_j15.tgz". But the template doesn't really look like the theme. The colors are correct, but the layout looks nothing like the demo. There was no navigation at the top for one thing. So I figured there was more to it so I then downloaded the "Infuse Extensions" from the template download page and installed some of those, at least the ones I thought applicable. I got the navigation, but it is still not working like it does in the DEMO. I am also not seeing the image slider (not sure if that is what you call it) and I installed the "mod_rokintroscroller-1.2.zip" file but that didn't do the trick either.

I also noticed that when I went to the admin for the template, the nice Rocket Interface is not there. Have I forgot to do something?

I have poked around a bit but it seems that most poeple in here are way more advanced so I am wondering if I am in over my head and if so, is there a better place to start that wll give me step by step instructions? I downloaded the tutorial PDF that came with the template, but they are pretty high level and do not get specific enough my skill level.

Here is a link to the page: Dallas Camera Club

      Discouraged and frustrated

      Many thanks,
      Houston

    • Sounds like you didn't install the sample data when using rocketlauncher.

    • When you downloaded the template, did you also download the rocketlauncher? That is a complete joomla installation with the template. You just install it as you would normally do installing joomla. It has the template preinstalled with example data. Then it looks exactly like the demo. I hope that helps.

    • If you install one template with the Rocket Launcher, then apply a different template, it will not look like the demo for the second template.

The only way to duplicate what a particular template looks like on the demo is t iuse the RL and install the sample data.

Applying a template to an existing install only applies the template.

You have to move your content around to match the new positions, or start over.

As far as 'missing images', the RL installs do not come with the images you see on the demo, only 'placeholder images' in order to comply with copyright restrictions, if that is what you are talking about.

Yeah when did the image policy go into affect? I haven't made a new site in a few months but last time I downloaded a rocket launch package all the images were included. You guys didn't get one of those extortion letters from gettyimages did ya?

    • hi there,

andy announced this new policy on march 4th:Andy Miller wrote:
The RocketLauncher will no longer contain all the sample images as used in the demos. This is a policy we will be employing going forward to ensure that images used are properly licensed. You will need to obtain your own licenses for any stock images you use.

when applying the extensions, you will also have to configure them correctly to work as desired.
this includes publishing to the correct module position, applying a module class suffix, selecting a certain section/category etc.

if you mean the nice interface in the crystalline template parameters, then this is the new interface from the gantry framework. all templates starting with dec2009 are based on this new framework, you can find more info and very helpful video tutorials here:
      www.gantry-framework.org
infuse was released a few months earlier, so it is not based on gantry and uses the default joomla template parameters screen.

joomla is a powerful tool and it takes some time to find your way, but within these forums you have a lot of helpful members and moderators who will try to help. :)

i am wondering, crystalline is NOT a free template...

      hope this helps, kat :)
