    How difficult is it to.....

Posted 18 years 1 month ago
    • How difficult is it to take a template created for joomla and convert it over to a "Look-alike" SMF theme. I know RTTC has/had a SMF theme club in which exact duplicates were created, but now it is no-more. I was wondering how hard is it to attempt this myself.

      Has anyone done this themselves?

What is needed to accomplish this?

Is it as simple as taking the source .psd images, exporting the slices, overwrite an existing template and adjust the appropriate .php/.css files for that template? Or is there more to it?

Please, if you have had any experience with doing this, I would like to know your thoughts and guidance as I am thinking of making my first attempt at it.

    • Lets just say my experiences in SMF template creation resulting in some end products which are against the natural laws of the Internet :D

To put it into perspective, Andy gave up the the SMF template club due to problems with the bridge etc.... (not in template creation)

Nevertheless, its all dependant on how much you want to change. If you want a wrapped SMF template, all you really need is the core, no headers etc... which should be an easy modification of images/css as you suggested

The best thing to do is just have a play and see how far you get ;D

    • Because i do not want my SQL DB getting too large and therefore having too many inquiries, I no-longer use any bridges. I also switched away from wrapping my SMF and just link to it through Joomla. Both programs seem to run much faster this way and having two separate DB's helps balance out the load. I have experimented with every option. Bridge, wrapper and now just link to it! I like the later for performance reasons.

With that said, I am going to attempt creating a theme for smf that looks identical in appearance and functionality as Vortex. This is the origin of my question.

Any advice as to what I can expect to be difficult or impossible? Have you tried it? If so any road blocks or conflicts? Should I not bother?

    • The general image editing and CSS should be easy as Joomla! But when you want to play around with the structure of the template that things get complicated. It is all dependant and your experiences with php.

All i can really recommend is find a great template that fits your agenda as closely as possible and then edit that one to your needs....it makes things so much easier and less time consuming
