Frustration with file permissions....

  • Frustration with file permissions....

    • I recently opened an account with a new host and seem to be encountering endless problems with file permissions.

New installations of Joomla have directory permissions of 755 (usually) but all the files are set to 644. Chmoding via Joomla doesn't make any difference - you have to change them all via Ftp - which can take a long time...

Templates are difficult to edit as even when you set permissions of 755 for the template_css.css and index.php the files accessed via Joomla are still unwritable. You can only change things if you set all the permissions to 777 - which seems too much of a security risk.

The host had chown-ed the domains and says I "own" the files, but suggests that Joomla is trying to write to files via the web server so permissions of 777 are needed. I've installed JoomlaXplorer but that won't change the file permissions - doesn't seem to think I'm the owner...

I've just wasted an entire day an got nowhere with this - meanwhile the site that I decided to rebuild from scratch at the new host is a total mess and unusable. It's maddening as with the 3 other hosts I've set up Joomla sites on both manual and Fantastico installations have set the permissions to 755 and you simply get on with things without having to think about any of these issues. I can't understand why it should be so different now. And this was supposed to be the ultimate hosting experience!! Support has responded (briefly) a couple of times today but not really answered my queries about why it is happening, whether it will always happen, and what to do to fix it.

Has anyone had a similar experience? and if so, what do I do? It's not just one domain - it seems to apply to all three that I've set up.

      Help anyone!!

    • i'd suggest you tell us who the host is... it's possible someone would have had experience with them and may have a solution

    • The exact same thing happens to me, although sometimes I cant change my file permissions via FTP or even via cpanel with File Manager, I have to e-mail my host and they do it. (I can change permissions back) I have to have everything 777 to write to it as well, so I always have to remember to change files back to 644 that I changed to 777 to make an update.

My host is Invision. (As in IPB) GREAT host though, support is rediculously great.

    • Latest advice from Support at Rochen:

"Simply use your FTP client to CHMOD these files if other components will not work for you.

755 is NOT writable.. 777 is."

It seems the only way to make files writable on my Joomla installations at Rochen is to set the permissions to 777. The permissions that work elsewhere (folder 755/file 644) simply don't work on the new sites installed there. But I can't seem to get an aswer why... I was under the impression that setting permissions to 777 was a security hazard (?) so where does that leave me...?

I'd heard really glowing things about Rochen and was looking forward to moving to them - but this has left me frustrated and baffled.

      Any further thoughts anyone?

    • Apparently "We do not run phpsuexec, and therefore, 777 is writable, not 755" - all of which is very confusing... Wish I'd found this out at the beginning of the day as it has been 12 hours of utter frustration and getting nothing done as I was under the impression you weren't supposed to set your permissions to 777.

I'm sure Rochen have their reasons - and presumably it is safe as they are very security minded - but as this means that you have to change quite a few permissions to get your basic installation to work fully it would be helpful to have some info in FAQs about it...

Yes, I can understand you feeling protective GollumX - one somehow has high expectations of Rochen and wants everything to go smoothly. It's why I moved to them - but also probably partly why I ended up feeling so frustrated today.

Still not sure quite how many files I need to change...
