    • Hi Forum

      Please take a look at the site I'm working on at http://ancestry-detectives.co.uk It's almost finished and I'd appreciate any thoughts/crits before I hand over to client. To do is install and customise the Virtuemart component for ecommerce.
      The template I used (butchered you might say!) is RocketTheme's beautiful Colormatic - although there's little trace of it left, the 'backbone' of it is still in there and keeps the site working smoothly ... I hope.

      Thanks
      Jon

    • you're a fan of bentobox aren't you :)

      wow, top marks for this one too :)

      i usually set the default width of my templates so that a 1024 width screen doesn't have to scroll horizontally, but this is just personal preference really. It's a beaut!

      just the way i like my templates too.... clean, business-like, straight lines, light.

      Might i suggest the Artion JoomSEF extension for search engine friendly url's.

    • I'm a fan of whatever is this month's new template from RocketTheme ... they just get better.

      Thanks for your tips I'll take both on board. Specially the SEF which is something I've not really got to grips with yet.

    • Just installed Artion JoomSEF on kelling-estate.co.uk and now I remember why I never got to grips with this - I get lost in all that .htaccess stuff.

    • Fantastic site there :)

      SEF does make your site much better, If you read the instructions, it informs you on exactly what to do with .htaccess.

      Just a recommendation in your css to stop your headings laying across each other

      In template_css.css change
      h1, h2, h3, h4, h5 {
      margin:15px 0pt;
      padding-bottom:5px;
      }

      t0
      h1, h2, h3, h4, h5 {
      line-height:normal;
      margin:15px 0pt;
      padding-bottom:5px;
      }

    • Thanks Again James, I'd been meaning to sort that line spacing out. Your advice is much appreciated. So you reckon I can configure for SEF without having to get my hosters to flick switches?

      Thanks for your kind words too by the way.

    • Assuming you're on an apache server (linux), it's easy as pie. install and follow all instructions, then if it breaks your site, promptly post your .htaccess file here. we'll edit it for you if you've made any mistakes and, assuming it isn't the .htaccess that is the issue, and if you want, i can check it out for you with an admin password.

      if you're running on IIS (windows), should be just as simple but i've never done it. others here would have.

    • I thought I'd try it out on a site which I'm just starting at http://bucks-arms.co.uk . I installed the component and was about to follow the instructions to configure but I seem to have 'lost' the main menu. (This is why I'm nervous of SEF) How could that happen?
      I had amessage when I installed the component whic looked like this -

      You must first edit the configuration, enable it and save before it will become active.

      Checking for .htaccess in Joomla! root...
      not found.

      Warning: fopen(/home/www/b/bucks-arms.co.uk/web/.htaccess) [function.fopen]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/www/b/bucks-arms.co.uk/web/administrator/components/com_sef/install.sef.php on line 70

      Unable to create .htaccess file in your Joomla! root. Please create this file yourself and add the following lines:

      DirectoryIndex index.php
      RewriteEngine On
      RewriteBase /

      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^(/component/option,com) [NC,OR]
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} (/|\.htm|\.php|\.html|/[^.]*)$ [NC]
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
      RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
      RewriteRule (.*) index.php

      Please check that the RewriteBase directive path is set correctly and matches your configuration.
