The pop ups aren't paying a flat fee, they are paying per view. The other banner ads on the site pay next to nothing, maybe $25 a month if we're lucky. We need those pop ups to survive. We can't afford to pay server bills every month. We started asking for donations from our forum members, who have been with the site for years and years and a decent amount will be donating 5/10 dollars a month, which helps out a lot. As soon as we start covering server costs / almost covering them, then the pop ups will go.
We've been running those particular pop ups for about six months now...traffic hasn't really been affected by them at all. Pretty much every wrestling site you can find has tons of pop ups, probably even more than us. I just can't see another way to cover server costs without these ads.
Have any of you tried Google ads? Do they pay well?
I think you are confused. We are not selling a product, we are a wrestling news / information site. There is nothing for people to buy.
If you have any other suggestions on how to cover costs without the use of those pop ups, I'd love to hear them.
You've answered your own questions...Google is Good - and it is built into the site (no pop ups allowed)
1. - I suggested you build ads into your site and not have pop ups...or have pop ups that work or have more friendly ones (like the modes that move in from the right or top or whatever)
2. - you are selling something - did you notice the pop ups when you go to your site? I said if your going to sell something - do it right.
3. - Your user help is a great idea but you never mentioned that - "You said I have to cover the cost and have ads" - again, if you are going to do ads then do them right.
4. - (Im Confused??) The Consumer or Public have to buy into whether they want to come to your source of news vs. someone else's news of the same subject - so you are SELLING REPORTING - Im not confused. And what news program that you watch or listen to on tv or radio does not have commercial sponsors to keep them capable of reporting the news. If you cannot afford to keep the site up - then you are not really a good reporter, because no one can see you. Reporting includes having all the tools to report - so, I respect what you have done, but respect all aspects of what you are doing including keeping the site up via advertising. (stop looking at it as something to get rid off and realize it is something that is part of the whole)
You can go tell me to take a leap off the corner post into the concrete (just make sure your taping it), but you posted here and I am going to give you feed back.

Cool, cause with your customer base and site content, you could revamp your marketing department and MAKE SOME MONEY with it.
I haven't seen your products or ads but I do know this -- good marketing skills and a little effort can make the difference between - $10.00 a month vs. $10,000.00 a month. That is why they have marketing departments...because - well, they make money.
But for me to even touch on tips for marketing - we would have to be working on joint project together...then I would help you revamp your ad campaign on that site because that is how I am (working together)...you have a lot of potential there...for growth of the site and possibilities to capitalize on the market.
By the way - read between the line ---->>> ummm I have a project coming up and I will be looking for joint partners...LMAO

I agree with a lot of Jamie is saying. I come to web design and marketing from the standpoint of a website MUST pay for itself, at the very least, with either money coming in or time/effort saved. Even better to make money from the site.
There are many ways to do this. Have you considered things besides ads? What about raffles? Custom Tees? Affiliate programs with products that appeal to your customer base? A "members-only" newsletter (paid subscription) or content?
ALL of these things have been put to use in sites that I have worked with in the past and work with now. I have made use of these to make sure that 90% of my income for the past decade plus has come from the internet.
