Very nice!
I noticed a line (or break in the texture) on the right side of the slide show, where it transitions on to the main background. Not a big deal. I don't think a red border on the left and right sides would look bad.

Very nice job! You asked for feedback on the background on the recipes page. I didn't find it distracting at all. It is easy to read. There is a slight lightening anyway which tends to allow the text to read threw well. I am using Firefox and I'd suggest that if you really want to see how this looks in the different browsers to use a Browser Tester like

@Ben - The artwork for the slider is from an ad agency and as such will not be seamless with the background, but I will send your suggestion to the client and see what they think.
