Looks nice, however my personal taste is that you do not need the Main Menu published twice. I see you have it on the left column and at the top of the page as well. Seems redundant to me and just takes up room, but that is only my personal opinion.
Great job for a first site.

I had wondered that myself...till I noticed how the left Main Menu created a more static tree of options when browsing...which is quite useful when I have submenus within submenus within submenus. With the "open" left menu I can move between nested pages easier then using the suckerfish dropdowns from the top.
