I just finished a new website for our church, using the Synapse template.
Site: watershed: a community church ( www.iamwatershed.com )
Using: Synapse template in Joomla! 1.5.3
Main additional components used:- Front Page Slideshow ( http://www.frontpageslideshow.net/ )
- Gcalendar for Joomla ( http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,1625/Itemid,35/ )
- Myblog and Jomcomment ( http://www.azrul.com )
- sh404SE ( http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,2380/Itemid,35/ )

I'm diggin it! Clean layout. A 'Complete Thought'.... so many websites have patch-work information. This one is clear.
Some other possible add-ons to look into should you decide to expand:
1) Prayer Center: allow people to submit their prayer request (found at Joomla.org)
2) VideoShare: Either showcase the best in Christian video's and news. You could either let the members submit their own Christian video's by linking to GodTube, YouTube or Google Video. It would keep them using the church site and seeing what others have posted.
3) Umm....that's about it. I could think of others but they might take away from the clean design you already have.

It's been a while since I made that change, but I believe this was the solution. Please let me know if this doesn't do the trick and I'll hunt check into it further.
In your template.css file (found in templates/rt_synapse_j15/css), starting around line 224 replace the original code with the code below:
