I'd changed the template in a very similar way by switching the template based in application.php as such:
if (strpos($_SERVER, 'MSIE 6.0') !== FALSE) {
$template = 'rhuk_milkyway';
}
Unfortunatly even with the most basic template designs the top menus wouldn't work. I think the problem lies with a javascript error.
Even if I put a brand new template as default for the whole site my menus don't work in ie6.
I'll try your suggestion anyway - your ie6 detection looks a lot more elegant than mine.

Sorry Gollum I should have read your post more carefully - I realise what your saying now - what a great idea - I'll implement this and see how I get on.

Just realised it looks elegant because it is missing a line :

To actually give $ua a value before the IF :$ua = $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT'];
