      I'd changed the template in a very similar way by switching the template based in application.php as such:

      if (strpos($_SERVER, 'MSIE 6.0') !== FALSE) {
      $template = 'rhuk_milkyway';
      }

      Unfortunatly even with the most basic template designs the top menus wouldn't work. I think the problem lies with a javascript error.
      Even if I put a brand new template as default for the whole site my menus don't work in ie6.

      I'll try your suggestion anyway - your ie6 detection looks a lot more elegant than mine.
