Joomla Video Tutorials - Chromatophore

    • Hi,

I would like to ask for some assistance. I am doing the tedious task of promoting and optimizing the Joomla Video Tutorial Site. If someone is fairly known with SEO, please have a look: www.joomtorial.com

I haven't put on any SEF yet, I am more thinking of keyword and description and content optimization before doing any SEF. I do believe SEF can be a great tool, but I don't think it is a necessity to get my first proper Google/Yahoo etc. rankings. I believe SEF won't get a site with 40-50 visitors a day to all of a sudden get 5000 just because of SEF. In that I think SEF is greatly overrated by many. Although I could be totally wrong here.

If there is someone that would like to dedicate some time to have a look at SEo optimization, that would be so great!

I am in the process of putting the site in the most renown directory listings, adding the site to press-release pages. I am trying to avoid the "free submit to 500 search engines" as I read that could just give the opposite result of what I want. Seems Google doesn't really like it. Of-course there is a sitemap running and submitted to Google. www.joomtorial.com/sitemap.xml

Any help is very welcome on SEO.

    • Hi,

I noticed I totally forgot to mention I have extensively attempted to use RokBox in the regular template as well as in the PHPBB3 template. I love RokBox, but for larger images, RokBox does have it's limit. It can't auto-resize to the viewport of the visitor - it uses static sizes :( , which with the alternative I found, it is a breeze. Beautifully resizes to the user's viewport. I have had contact with Djamil and he told me a while ago he was working on a proper RokBox resizing implementation.

Have a look at my RokBox alternative here:

      www.joomtorial.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=16

And scroll to the image and click it. once clicked, you will notice it uses your viewport and shows a "show original size" button right top. Someday I hope RokBox can do that.

And here for the rokBox alternative on for instance the contact form.

      www.joomtorial.com/index.php?option=com_...icle&id=21&Itemid=11

A nice example is the one under "How can I best contact Joomtorial.com?"

    • Hi all,

I have been trying and trying to get the pages visible on Google, but SEO is not my main game. Is there anyone that could give some clear recommendations and/or point out some good tools for a good SEO tactic for this Joomla Video Tutorial website?

At this moment using sh404 and getting on page #2 on Google after 10 days of the site launch. Of-course we all want to be on page #1, but I think it should be possible for this one.

Any SEO suggestions small or big are welcome.

    • Hi all,

This project started a long time ago, even so, the development started in Joomla 1.0.x when 1.5 was not in stable release. I decided to re-develop in Joomla 1.5.x when that got in stable release.

At that time the RT Chromatophore was the most suitable and fitting template, but now I am in doubt if I should perhaps change the template.

I hope someone has some thoughts on a good fitting newer RT template for the site.

Hopefully some can spend a bit of time on offering some input on this. Thanks in advance for your time!

    • Piet,

I could suggest different templates all day long, but if it's not broke, why fix it?

I have two sites built on Chromataphore, and even though there have been 12 templates since then, Chromatophore suits my needs for those sites.

While I've toyed with the idea of changing to a newer templates, I have to ask myself, 'to what end?'

Unless you need some functionality or additional Module positions found in the newer templates, I wouldn't worry....

      Just my two cents....
    • Thanks,

    • Hi JEM,
While I've toyed with the idea of changing to a newer templates, I have to ask myself, 'to what end?'

I think i am facing a case of "toying with the idea" here. I think you are right, it would create so much unnecessary work.

      I will follow your advice.

    • Hi all,

A few additions have been added to the site.

      - Created a bloggish kind of section with on the right side the famous roklatest. An oldie and had to dig deep in the archives to find the roklatest module, but found it and tweaked it a little to fit better in the overall website.

      Have a look here: www.joomtorial.com/news

Next to that I am still wondering about the best SEO tactics for the site. Got some advices, but I may have a few years of experience with Joomla, SEO is way beyond me. I hope someone can explain in layman terms what would be the best I could do.

Hopefully there is someone willing to have a look and spend some time on the site and could tell me.

    • A little addition in the forum side of the website. As you can see, it is the RT Cromatophore PHPBB 3 template. What I found lacking is the searh in a clear and significant spot (search for entire form + advanced search).

The PHPBB3 RT Chromatophore has a search module on the forum frontpage at the bottom. Not the first place you would like it and certainly not a convenient spot for users that come onto the forum and want to search right away.

So I played around a bit with the login bar and putting an extra search in. I think it is in a good spot and visually fitting with the overall look & feel.

      See for yourselves.

Next to that I am still putting a lot of time and effort into SEO. It is hard to get good and detailed information about what exactly are good SEO tactics for Joomla, except the comments, put in an SEO SEF tool, which of-course are great advise, but don't do the trick just by having them in.

I have read a few posts from users I think have their heads in the right place. SEF doesn't mean you all of sudden get picked up by Google and see you visitors rise skyrocket. I believe still content is king and writing proper articles will do more than just turning on SEF. In this era, I believe Google is not just looking at page title and meta's any longer. Those days are over that you just put in a bunch of keywords and descriptions and voila. Google rank #1. It doesn't work that way. As I vaguely recall, Google has about 250 criteria that get you high in rankings or could get you penalized. Nice thing about Google is, they won't tell you what those 250 criteria are! Nice transparency for a company huh??

So I have been trying, writing some decent articles and trying to post the site at decent press-releases. I avoided the "let us send your url to 5000 search engines with 1 click" things. I have read that eventually that might even have a bad influence on your ranking!?

The site is running 3 weeks now and I must say, Google ranking is not bad at all! With the keywords: Joomla Video Tutorial I get a ranking on page #1 on Google and with the words Joomla Video Tutorials (with s) I get on the top of page #2. I am pretty satisfied with that result so far.

Of-course. This is not a time to sit still. When you do that with Google, you plummet with you rankings. So I will continue writing my articles, doing my sitemaps and stay busy with it.

The worst things is. I wish I knew what has made the site get the decent rankings!

If there is anyone, anyone that could shed a light on Joomla and the best SEO tactics. Let yourself be heard. I am really so interested in what more I can do to a) maintain at least the ranking it has now and b) get better positions.

    • Hi all,

Added a few more features on the site. As RocketTheme uses itself, I have made use of the Intense Debate comment system and of-course making use of the rokintense plugins. Works so simple yet so beautiful!

Some users on the website also stated that on the more blog-like items they were missing an important date of the article. Personally I dislike the format of the default date and time stamp system from Joomla, I have been searching for a nice looking one. And I think I found a fairly decent one.

      extensions.joomla.org/extensions/calenda...-&-time/7751/details

The hardest part in those datestamps seems to be that if you have a 3rd party plugin, it overrides all you settings on where you want dates to show. This plugin mentioned above is easily set to show where you want (and not want it). It is highly configurable and has up to 12 little different calendar icons. Very nice indeed.
