A community of Golfers | Where the round never ends...

    • So, using Affinity I revamped an older site, well, actually started from scratch.

There is about 9 parts to this site and the site is now live with just the first two parts.

Part 1: (Community Builder) I used that to create Golf Cards where members can rate, toast and roast each other. Pretty cool and simple.

Part 2: (JomSocial) I used that to create a community/social network section just for Golfers...

Can't wait to keep developing it...

Just looking for general feedback at this point.

      Thanks,
      Wingman

    • Wingman,

That's a nice looking site. Is the login/registration module community builder?

      Wingman,

That's a nice looking site. Is the login/registration module community builder?

The main page login (Middle of the page) is JomSocial.

Hole Number One is "JomSocial" - that is the Community portion. Profiles, blogs, picture sharing, video sharing and more. (A Place for Golfers)

Hole Number Two is "Community Builder" - I am using that as a tool, not a community portal, to create "Golf Cards" for each member. There they can grade their golf skills, rate others golf skills and Roast & Toast Each other. Plus, more features. What community builder lacks over JomSocial for building a community site, it excels at being an incredible platform to build tools off of. (Think outside the box!)

I am still working on the other Holes 3-18, but I think Hole #3 will blow people away. Thanks for the compliment, but I give most of the credit to RT Team! I swear they build the templates for me personally, as that template has such a golf feel to it already. I just got to keep adding he touch ups and little icons I have planned.

My goal is to make the ultimate community Niche site, that blows anything away on the web and serves that niche totally. That niche being the golf community - I have a partner who is a golfer who feels the same way. After it is done, I can then duplicate the process for other niche sites.

Anyway, if your into golf - I recommend checking it out. The Motto is - "Where the round never ends."

      Thanks and Peace Out,
      Wingman

    • I'm kind of torn between JomSocial and CB. I like the ability to link to Facebook and that look and feel. I really want to capture some enhanced user information upon registration and then use that in profiles, including in my phpbb3 board.

I also am using the affinity template. Love it.

Honestly, I'm not much into golf, but I did grow up in NM, if that means anything.

Take care. I'll keep an eye out for your site as it continues to build.

    • If you were to use both like I am - you can always inverse it and make CB your main registrations and there are some advantages to that too. One, CB requires user synch and if you register with CB the user is synched.

People try to dog CB, but I see to many good things from it.

Also, this a social site - so making it as easy as possible to sign in and get aboard it my goal...I am working on Adding Yahoo, Google, MSN, AOL, Twitter and more logins to the site and make it as easy as possible for people to register and sign in. Plus, people are tired of MASS registrations, usernames and emails.

The advantage is - they come aboard faster
The disadvantage is - you can't collect all the info you want at registration.

      Good luck on your site!

Hmm, I'm guessing by your Icon - when I get to a Bowling community site - you'll be Jumping to Join. LOL :cheesy:

      Peace Out,

Actually, it's a picture of Richard Nixon bowling, and is a poster hanging on the wall in "The Big Lebowski" so if you come up with a BIg Lebowski site, I might be interested.

Interesting point about CB vs. JomSocial. I think the problem I have now is that my phpbb3 and Joomla installs use separate databases and I believe CB requires them to be on the same in order to sync. Not sure if Rokbridge (that I'm currently using) can overcome that, or if JomSocial has the same limitations.

I'll have to investigate further. I'll post a link to my site here soon, once it's a little more ready for prime time and continue to follow your build-out.

I'm definitely on the same page as you regarding ease of registration. Didn't think about the lack of information gathered, but if the community is setup correctly, they will hopefully add the pertinent stuff after the fact.

      Thanks for the ideas.

    • Well, as soon as I get over some hurdles - I have site I want to hit along the line of movies.

www.CriticTrax.com/ <-- it's a movie/everything review site for fans with a twist. So, maybe one day I will have a "BIg Lebowski" site for ya! (BIg Lebowski - you either love it or you hate it!)

Glad I opened up new ideas and considerations for ya.

      Peace Out!

    • Hey Wingman, I like what your doing with your site. I'm looking to upgrade my site using affinity you said you started from scratch just how did you do that if I can ask? I don't want to loose my content on my live site, does the login and registration work together (register with Jomsocial but logs you in also in CB? Just like you said I want one login and registration for everything. Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Hey, Kent we just scratched everything and rebuilt the site new, but you don't have to. JomSocial, k2 and Joomla play nice together for Registration and Login. CB on the other hand only plays nice for login. Meaning you can register with any of the first three and login with any of the four.

When you do login to WeWhoGolf.com you will notice that I have the JomSocial Login Module live on ever page Titled Hole #1, then the same for CB titled Hole #2 then as I advance K2 will be viewable.

So, the problem is if you are using CB you have to A) have your guest sign in via CB registration to insure that the synch fires (I personally think that is archaic of CB not to remove that) If you do that you can't take advantage of say "FaceBook" connect, well you can but you will have to manually synch CB and once that is done - your all good.

I am looking it to alternative synch options for CB then you can use any login. I am about to get RPXNOW.com hooked up to all my sites. The coder, a really great guy who puts out rock solid stuff, almost has the module ready that will connect RPX to any site. RPX let's your guest login with Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Myspace, Google and much, much more. But again, on some of my sites that will mean I have to manually approve the members CB profile (Everything else will auto work like K2, Joomla etc..)

I would highly suggest trying out K2 too. You can import all your Joomla articles easily - then easily readjust them in the background and rework them till ready to replace the old Joomla content component - K2 is so much easier to manage, add articles to and more. But again you can always test in the background.

      Hope some of this helps.

      Peace out,
      Wingman
