esaumd: I used Calendar Plugin by Kieran O'Shea http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar/ , in my opinion, the available calendar plugins for wordpress are far from perfect but the Kieran O'Shea plugin is the best of the lot. It's well constructed and good to go right out of the box, minor css modification and it can go well will almost any site. Only gripe is it does not handle well in my mobile theme. The slideshow is the NextGEN Gallery plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/nextgen-gallery/ which is also a well constructed very straight forward plugin that is limitless in customization.
