I finally switched my site -- http://www.created-expression.com -- to Joomla! and went live not quite a week ago. (I am behind in my translations so to my francophone friends... Un peu de patience SVP :o ) Please drop by when you have a moment. And... constructive criticism always welcome.
      A RocketTheme and Bentobox fan,
      Ines.
p.s. Thanks to RocketTheme for the great work and to the community for such a great forum.

In my opinion you should remove the splash page. Better to go directly to your home page. What you're doing is making your content harder to reach.

It takes me one more click than it should to view your content (or buy something)

The search engines don't like that either.

      Constructive Crit~ 2

      Very slow loading.
      Constructive Crit~ 3

Maybe reduce width by a few pixels to avoid sidescrollbar on 1024 screens

      Now that thats aside...

It's beautiful. My recommendation for "Site of the Quarter"

    • Thank you for the very constructive criticism and the lovely comments. I'm a little nonplussed (in a good way) actually.

The splash page is a leftover (I now realize) from previous versions of my site which had separate French and English "branches", read "sites". Thanks for making me see this.

I agree about the slowness. I still haven't optimized my images but I will sooner rather than later.

For the width... you're right that I should narrow it just a little despite my love of s p a c e . Sigh.

    • Hi!
I like your site because its not looking like all the joomla sites. How did you do the transparency in the tabs? With css? If yes, is it really working on IE? If not, what other technique? Thank you very much for the answers, for me the transparency is an important design feature.

If interested in my work (I try to design the pages not so confusing as other joomla pages with thousand of modules...: www.myblueplanet.ch )

Hi Kai. Thank you for having taken the time to look and to comment.

The tabs are transparent "png" images. The left part of the tabs are empty except to add a less transparent dividing line and, for the "on" tab, an opaque outer corner that defines the round part of the tab from the outside. The colour I chose for the latter works best for the tabs of the sections that people spend most of their time in. For the others, the corner is sometimes too dark and sometimes too light but I'm hoping that the content takes people's focus away from the menu.

And... I am indeed interested in your work. Your site is beautiful and clear and breaks the task of getting into this huge and very important topic very manageable. Good work! I will be back both for the content and to learn more about your content organization.

I agree with you about the overwhelming effect that "too much information" has on us. I actually think that the however-many "seconds to catch a person's attention" is a wrong interpretation of why people leave so quickly. If I can't find a connection to something that makes sense and is meaningful to me right away, if I feel bombarded rather than guided, if I have to work to understand why I might want to be there, I'm gone. There are actually a bunch of cognitive studies that confirm and are working to explain the "no more than 7 things", a bunch more about where our attention is naturally drawn and some fascinating stuff about what we do and don't read. http://www.humanfactors.com/ has some of the best information I've ever come across, if you're interested.

I'm sure that we could exchange a while on all of these topics but will stop here for now. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
