I'm experiencing the same issue with a Joomla 1.7 install.
Thanks for the tip off about Rokpad, I switch my editor now to JCE before I edit Categories and all seems to be working well.

Yeah, this "one click editor switch" is awesome: to be able to change the editor from a menu without "page reload" is A MUST ! Cannot live without it now, even on some J1.5 sites (and some "old" extensions...).
Looking forward for the next version
