How do I move a site to a subdomain in Joomla?

  • How do I move a site to a subdomain in Joomla?

Posted 18 years 3 weeks ago
    • I am not as savvy as I would like to be with using Joomla, but I would like to do the following and I hope someone here can provide some guidance ;)

      1. I would like to move a copy of my site to a subdomain
      2. I would then like to modify, experiment with module placement, change templates, etc
      3. Then I would like to move this back onto my main domain so that the transition to new templates is seamless for visitors.

Can anyone please walk me through how to do this without breaking things? :D

    • A commercial solution would be JoomlaCloner .
      JoomlaCloner 1 Year Support&Upgrades ($49.95)
JoomlaCloner - your site backup and restore utility! This license allows you 1 year FREE access to product upgrades and support!
      JoomlaCloner 2 Years Support&Upgrades ($69.95)
JoomlaCloner - your site backup and restore utility! This license allows you 2 years FREE access to product upgrades and support!
      [url=JoomlaCloner Unlimited Support&Upgrades ($99.95)
JoomlaCloner - your site backup and restore utility! This license allows you unlimited FREE access to product upgrades and support!][/url]

I haven't used it yet, but I hear very good things about it - I plan on buying it pretty soon.

      Best of luck and cheers!

    • You could just do it manually...I always prefer a manual transfer as i like to know why things have gone wrong :D

    • Can't you just copy the files to the subdomain and edit the 'configuration.php' file to reflect the new path? Some of the components may have to have their path edited too. Won't that work, or am I all washed up?

    • The only problem with simply moving the files to a different folder (that the subdomain is pointed to) is that the two sites would be sharing a database.

The way that I do it is to use the database manager (PHP MySQL or similar) and export the database, and then create a new database, and import the tables. Copy the site to a different folder (the one that the subdomain points to), and then edit the configuration.php file to reflect the new location, and the different database info.

At that point, you will have an exact functional clone of the site, with its own database and everything, which you can do whatever you want to.

When it is time to switch the new design for the old one, go into the configuration, and turn the site off (this will give users the Joomla! site is down message). Then, you can make all the other changes. I always make any database changes first, as they are the hardest (especially if there is a lot of merging to do). Then I copy the files over, except for the configuration.php. Finally, I edit configuration.php, and copy it over, and then you will have a working site, with minimal downtime, but without the danger of someone doing something on the old site in mid-transition.

If you have a lot of merging to do between the databases, you might want to look for more specific help on that subject. Merging databases in general can get a little nasty, and Joomla! has its own particular quirks as well. As long as the changes you make to the new site are easy to set up, you can get around the merge issue by making a new backup of the "old" site just after you take it offline for the switchover. Then, update the "new" site's database with that backup, and make the needed changes (reset the template, module locations, etc.). As soon as it is right, you can cut over like I outlined above, and you will be set. The only downside to this approach is that your downtime will be slightly longer,

Regardless, and I know it kind of sucks, I like to cut sites over around midnight between Sunday and Monday (for the region that most of the site's traffic is from) if at all possible, as that seriously limits the chance that many (or any) visitors will see the site down page.

Ditto on that. Good info. I do know that you don't have two sites using the same DB, but I wasn't sure about the workflow. That's a good one there!
