How far would you go for your photos?

    • I'm sick at the moment and should stay in bed, but as I popped my head out of the door and noticed the wonderful lighting, I just had to get out and shoot some great photos. (At least in between of all the coughing.)

So I've gotten to think about how far would I actually go to get those photos...?

    • I would go pretty far...

In May i took a 10 km bike-ride at like 2:30 at night, then walked up to the top of a ski-slope. Only to see the sunrise and the awesome moonset. For the first time in my life i saw a "rust red" moon going down =) Btw, it was only 2c so it was kinda chilly...

And once i was driving about 240 KM's just to get some nice lightning shots but we missed the big action, sadly :(

    • When I was in high school, I turned my bedroom into a darkroom because I had access to the school's darkroom only two periods a week.

Tons of times with my high school friends, we ignored 'Do not enter', 'Slippery when wet', etc to get a good shot.

Here in Japan (against my better judgment) I hopped on a train to go to a local beach (30 minute ride) in the middle of a typhoon warning, 'stay at home, if you are at work, stay at work, don't go outside, etc.'

Got to the beach just before all the train lines shut down for three hours until the storm passed.

(Great photos, a bit scary (and dangerous) to see roofs torn off buildings and fly away)

I've gotten up at 3 am to ride the train, a subway, another subway, and a cable car to the top of Mt. Rokko to take pictures of the sunset on New Year's morning.

(Voted top three spots in Japan for the night view, sunrise is pretty good, too.)

We often plan our 'weekend getaways' based on the photo opportunities available in a particular place, bamboo forests, trees that are hundreds or almost a 1000 years old, natural formations, coastline, old temples or shrines, etc. (and of course what local cuisine is available).

I'm sure Mike can share some experiences....

    • I've also gotten a concussion while shooting a photo from a ladder. But at least I saved the camera.

    • I entered a biker bar with a bad reputation... only to find that the bad boys were now bad old men... Those reputations last a lot longer than the ability to carry out the acts that caused them.

    • And it turned out to not be the best idea I've had. I've just been in the hospital as I got far worse.

But at least the photos are pretty awesome. :D

    • Sometimes, the picture is worth a little personal risk. Just make sure that it is important enough for the price you pay. I don't think I would risk a broken leg for a snapshot of Dick Cheney or Joe Biden eating lunch at McDonalds. Now, if they were eating lunch TOGETHER...
