    • I've tried posting on the virtuemart forums, but haven't had any luck getting a reply on this problem. Maybe not alot of people use the csv uploader? Or perhaps noone uses it to import categories? I don't know, but figured I had seen VM talked about here, so maybe someone here has had and solved this problem. Basically I have the category paths setup in my csv file and everythign looks like it should go well, I upload the file and it goes fine. However, when I look at the category list, it creates a category for every instance of that category path that is in my file. So basically, if I have 5 products all going into the same category path, it make 5 different versions of that category path and places 1 product in each one. I would assume it is supposed to create a category path if it notices one doesn't exist, however after it creates the path the first time, i would assume that the it should be able to put the other products with that same category path into the newly created category path. Here is my csv file if that helps any:

and I am using virtuemart 1.0.10 and joomla 1.0.12

If you want to see what I am talking about with the multiple creation of the categories, here's a screenshot:)

Thanks for any help any of you can provide!

    • Well, I found the culprit. It was the inches symbol. I was using '' two apostrophe signs. Originally I was using the double quotes, but that caused excel to put another set of double quotes at the beginning and end of those lines causing even more problems, so I switched it to the acute double accent symbol. Unfortunately, csv file format didn't recognize that and just replaced it with a question mark. So, does anyone know how you can use some sort of inches symbol in a csv upload?

      Thanks,

    • There are a few import/export utilities here:
      virtuemart.net/index.php?option=com_smf&Itemid=71&board=57.0
There's some excel macros to massage the files. I'm sure this can be fixed.

I think Virtuemart is a great extension. However, it is losing momentum because of the extensive delays in Joomla releasing a stable beta, or anything for that matter. The VM demo runs on 1.5, he has a 1.5x version ready to go, it's the Joomla core that's holding things up.

It was for that reason I abandoned my site running Vmart and switched it over to Drupal. The ecommerce components for Drupal are far more powerful, flexible, and have a lot of community support.

I'm starting to lean towards Drupal more and more every day. I don't know what happened to the Joomla core, but it seems likes they have lost direction, focus and momentum. Even the forks are starting to pass them up, Elxis has more going on and more improvements then Joomla does right now.

    • Well that's horrible to hear. How are the templates for drupal? Are they similar to joomla and as abundant?

On a side note, I did figure out how to get the symbol placed into every spot I needed EXCEPT for the product name!LOL I was able to use the html code ˝ in the category path, short description, and long description. Oddly enough however, when I went to use it in the name, on the front end, it just spit the html code right back out at me instead of the " symbol. I will check out those tools you linked to. I hope that the loss of momentum in joomla doesn't cause you to leave this board because you have been a great help to me with the parked domain script alone:)

      Thanks,

That is the only thing lacking in Drupal. If there was an RT equivalent for Drupal, Joomla would die a quick death. Maybe. The learning curve is a bit steeper in Drupal, but well worth it. It has so much more power and flexibility, but that's a whole different debate.

Glad you got that 1/2 way sorted out. Are you using the updated import/export utility? It solved a few problems for me. It's in that forum link, look for Roland. He's a pretty good programmer and has released some great stuff.

    • I had tried the improved csv uploader from RolandD before, and had some issues..of course I was having issues before I tried it..that being why I tried it, so peerhaps I didn'thave issues with it, I just couldn't fix the problems I was already having..who knows:) However, in VM 1.0.10 they have taken alot of the features from the improved csv and made them a standard part of the virtuemart core. So I haven't switched to it on this version because I haven't needed anything from it yet that they didn't port over. However, I do definitely read Roland's posts when I am having issues with the csv uploads:)

On an unrelated note..I hopped onto that dreamhost deal from jce-tech..gotta love that offer:) I was using gator host and paying monthly what they charge for a year:) So again, I thank you:)
