I am wondering how much I should charge for different things, like Joomla installation, customising template, adding components, adding hosting, making a logo etc
How much should I charge for these sort of services?
Prices vary quite dramatically. But it all comes down to 2 things, How much your client is willing to pay and How good you are with web development? A client is not going to pay $1000 for something rubbish
Suppose, but also should I charge per hours or fixed?
I suppose a mix of both would be good, but (in your experience) what are the average clients willing to pay? Say a small business or advanced home user...
Pricing is not my strong point, I am far too kind which is not good in the business world
Each website will be different and you will make a quote on that. Break down everything that you would do in a site and assign a price per item i.e.. install joomla!, install forum, install a complex component etc....
Then you can sum up the little prices until the final quote. You could always offer a "discount" for larger projects. There is no easy way to pin a price
I am just undertaking becoming a web host reseller (for
www.rochen.com
- plug ) and I intend upon offering clients a combination service:
- initial design of site
- monthly maintanance
- hosting package
I am still wrestling with creating the various "packages" and prices for same.
I hope that helps somewhat.
Cheers!

If your gonna bang out some nifty stuff (special coding) you charge for that by the hour, if you charge for joomla installation by the hour your gonna have to charge 1100.00 an hour to make any money. So get a good pricing scheme to work with i would go per site and charge a specific amount for the set up of the site. Then your residual (maintenence), then hosting set up fee, then monthly on that as well. Then you got every little change you make making you money, make sure to specifuy whats covered in maintenance or your gonna be coding flash for peanuts. The idea is to keep them happy but make them think they are getting a good deal. Never be the stupid ass that offers it for ten dollars.
When you go to buy a computer do you want the 100.00 one or the 1500.00 one? Ofcourse 1500.00 one cause you assume its got more and better stuff and isnt a piece of trash. You would feel like you would have more to work with and get a better computer cause the cheap one has to be junky, and if your using it for work your gonna want it to be as good as you can get. Likewise no one wants to spend money on advertising, but you have to in order to attain a decent amount of business. But theres two kinds of advertisment, the stuff that works and the stuff that doesnt. 200.00 webistes stink of waste of money, junk, doo doo, where as the 15,000 dollar site sounds like you got something to offer. Ofcourse thats where your skill sets come into play, flash, SEO, and other goodies that create effective websites. But your job is to make them money via the web if you can do that then charge for it if nto keep making your own sites until you figure it out, then start selling it.
My first paying site attracted 486,000 people in one year and is ranked 2 in google for NSST. The owner of the business made 250,000 dollars from that site the first year. What do you suppose thats worth? think about that when you come up with your pricing plans, i woudl have punched myself in the dong if i would have sold that for 1500.00. But i could have also sold it for 100,000 dollars and he woudl still have been pumped because the money spent would be far less than what was profited.
So if you offer them the ability to effectively promote their business or skill on the web then you have something to work with. trust me every hillbilly tobacco chewing hillrod and his three toothed cousin has tried selling someone their fancy web site for 200.00. Heres the reality of web design regardless of what you think, feel, and become emotional about, if they dont get results from the site then the money has been wasted. regardless of how beautiful or magnificent or well made it is, if it doesnt increase bottom line then its wasted money.
my free advise is never tell them about your design skills and your magnificent pretty photoshop glory cause they dont care. If i crap on the floor and it attracts customers they will pay me to keep crapping on the floor.
keep that in mind when pricing there is no price too high if it works. Go high and negotiate down.
