What is the best size of images and videos for websites?

Hello! I am pretty new to this and wanted find out the best sizes for an image (and video) for a website. I have some pretty large images, but I wanted to get a feel so that when people give me an image, they give it to me in the right sizes.
Also, for those that I have that are humongous, not sure how I can EFFECTIVELY resize them without compromising the quality. Should I work with JPG or PNG?

And you can blow it up to HD too if you want to.
And image formats... I love PNG and hate JPG
JPG destroys the image and also distorts the colours.
PNG is normally bigger than JPG but you can always try some PNG crunchers to reduce the size. - Please reply with a direct link to the issue & create a new thread for each new issue.

@prim... That video was AWESOME... I'll stick to PNG files... But, numerically, what sizes should I be using?
@MountainTech... I am using Photoshop, but it seems as though when I reduce the size I reduce the quality... Maybe I am doing something wrong...
Do you guys have any recommendations on the numerical ranges of image size limits?

Firebug is such a nice tool...
when I reduce the size I reduce the quality... Maybe I am doing something wrong...
