SOLVED Bit of a Dilemma! And a happy new year to you all!

    • Greetings all and sundry. I have a dilemma which i would be most grateful of your input.

I am meeting a current client next week regarding his website. He has been a client for nearly 4 years now and he is also a freind of mine.

When I first built his site it was built on joomla 1.012, and bar a few security fixes it still is Joomla 1.0. Obviousley a lots changed since then and I think he needs a total rework although we are both still reasonably happy with the cosmetics of the site.

      The dilemma is as follows:
The site in my mind is very unsecure (as it is joomla 1.0).
There are a couple of things not displaying as they did ie: background dissapeared in a couple of browsers.
Some of the extensions have improved vastly but are not supporting 1.0 anymore.

      Do I:
Upgrade it all for free as security is my main concern and should it be my responsibility to keep a site secure forever.
Offer a full redesign even though he is happy with the general look of the website.
Explain if he doesn't upgrade the site and pay for it i cannot be responsible for any security breaches.
And so on and so on - i hope you get the picture.

Also should something have been wrote into the quote/invoice/contract which covered this as i will no doubt have to go through this again with joomla 1.6 just being round the corner (although i probably won't give this serious consideration until 1.6.6ish

Your thoughts please ladies and gentleman.

Regards and a happy new year to you all

      Wayne

    • IMHO

      Time = Money

If you delivered the site in J1.0, then I think keeping the site updated to the most current version of J1.0 should be your main concern.

You (or I, or any of us) probably can't afford anything beyond that.

I would keep upgrading the site as a J1.0 site, but would not offer 'perpetual upgades' or even consider moving the site from J1.0 to J1.5 unless you could convince the client it would be worth it to do so for an additional fee.

There are many ways to migrate a J1.0 site to J1.5, all of which are described on joomla.org.

Being a purist (and based on the size of the site), I would opt out of migration and transfer the site with 'cut and paste', along with upgrading all the extensions.

At this point, based on Andy's post here:

      www.rockettheme.com/blog/joomla/988-shou...upgrade-to-joomla-16

I would not consider making the leap from 1.0 to 1.6, 1.0 to 1.5 would probably suit you jsut fine if your client will go for it.

    • Hey JEM, thanks for your reply. Visited customer last week and by sheer coincidence his business has just won some awards, as a consequence he wants a full redesign. Problem solved. I am definately sticking with 1.5, and, as the site is rather small I have just exported the sql database with migrator.

      Thanks for the advise.
