    • Couple of thoughts for you... I upgraded to a MacBook Pro with max everything (RAM, etc.) at the beginning of 2007. Although I'm happy with it generally, there are definitely issues to be aware of with respect to software compatibility and the Intel processors. Apple will tell you that non-Intel compatible software might not run as fast under Rosetta, but that it will still basically run and your computer will be fine. This has not been my experience.

Shortly after I got the computer, I started getting crashes on sleep followed by kernel panic errors. I ran all the usual diagnostics -- none showed any errors or problems. Then I went and double and triple checked that I had downloaded all the most recent drivers and updates for everything under the sun. And I did other things recommended on the Apple forums like resetting the PMU, zapping the PRAM, etc. After all that I called tech support and they told me it was a software problem and that Adobe CS2 products are in no way guaranteed to work with Intel-based Macs!!! Apple was telling me this before CS3 was even released!!! Boy would i have liked to know that before I shelled out $3K USD.

I've owned Macs since the mid-1980s and am quite comfortable troubleshooting and such, but this situation has had me fairly peeved as it has meant that I've had to pay out almost as much to update my software as I did to buy the computer. I should note here that none of the software I originally installed on it was more than two years old.

BUT ANYWAY... If you are switching from PC to Mac then you probably have to buy all new software anyway so these things may not be an issue for you. Just make sure you go through your whole software list and download every single updater you can find.

      As to your specific questions:
My 24" Dell monitor will work with this - right?
      YES
I should be able to plug a normal network cable into the mac for my internet connection - right?
      YES
The .mac account is that something worth the money or should I skip that?
      SKIP IT
The extra protection care deal is that worth it, or should I skip it?
Yes if you get a laptop (IMHO). And for a desktop version... hmm. I've seen situations where it has been *absolutely* worth it, but it's a question of statistics and whether you end up drawing an unlucky number. Early on I never bought the applecare plan, but now I do because I travel a lot and have a laptop.
I have some fairly new Samsung sata disks in my PC, could those be plugged into a Mac?
      Sorry, dunno.
I have two new Creative MP3 players a 30gb and a 4gb will they work, or should I get rid of em and get an ipod instead - i mean i would lose some fun without an ipod - right?
iPods can be pretty fun all right...
