Reseller to Dedicated Server

    • I went from a reseller account to a managed dedicated server about a little over a week ago. While there were some bumps in the road, I'm absolutely delighted now that all is working. Since the server is managed, I could call upon tech support to take care of these bumps. They also transferred all the accounts.

My reseller host was offering a dedicated rental offer with a buy 1 month, get 3 months free. While I had been contemplating this change for the near future, this gave me the kick I needed to make the transition now.

As a host of Joomla sites, I really like the ability to configure the server to Joomla's needs and optimize security. I was able to run phpsuexec to get rid of that pesky ownership error and enhance security. Editing the root php.ini allowed me to turn off the register_globals off--improving security for the server and the Joomla sites.

I had a few issues involving registering dns information, and apache was not running initially. All was resolved quickly through tech support.

Over the course of the past 15 months I've gone from shared hosting, to reseller, and now to dedicated. cPanel/WebHost Manager has made the transition easier. The first jump from cPanel to WHM was pretty simple. The interface was familiar--although extended. Going from WHM Reseller to WHM Server has been a much bigger jump; however, the interface remains familiar.

I paid configserver to tweak the server, install and configure a firewall, harden security, and install a very effective spam scanner--mailscanner. It was a one-time charge that includes automatic updates.

Overall, I don't need a lot more knowledge to run a server. On the other hand, I am starting to learn linux to gain a yet greater degree of control. I've learned much more about dns and ssl management. Setting up an ssl reseller account has led to big savings!

I don't want this post to serve as an advertisement for a hosting service, but I'd like to pass on that the transition, while difficult at first, is certainly worthwhile!

    • Hey steve, i also went the configserver route and have been very happy with the result.. the security stuff alone is amazing, you won't believe how many folks try to hack rockettheme on a daily basis, but the security stuff detects it and locks them out.. sweet...

    • i'm another satisfied configserver user, though i haven't purchased any of their packages. i installed the csf firewall + lfd (both free) and followed a whole bunch of howto's on webhosting forums to secure my vps.

i initially got the vps after my joomla site got hacked. i decided shared hosting just wasn't for me. rather than get a managed dedicated server for $400/mnth i went the vps route for $200/mnth. The vps is fully scalable so as i grow i can just add (pay for) more ram and disc space.

    • I had to jump on the promotion before I was able to get up to speed--so having configserver install their cPanel Service Package and Mail Scanner was a no-brainer. It would have traken me ages to figure out how to install and tweak all the things they did. I ordered on a Sunday and it was installed the next morning. Everything from firewall, optimal security settings, spam filter, backups, and more all setup and tweaked. Attackers get 5 shots at a pw, then their ip addy is blocked.

The managed dedicated server only comes to $219/mo for 2-160 GB drives (they advertised 2-80 GB), 2GB RAM, and 4 2.8 GHZ xeon processors (Again better than advertised).

who are the hosts that have this package?

Hostgator. They discontinued the buy 1 month get 3 months free though. Now it is Buy 1 and get 2 free.

No guarantee that they will actually deliver the 160 GB, but I know that is what I and others that I have communicated with have gotten. Same with the faster processors.

    • had i known about this 3months ago i would have signed up. guess hostgator just isn't that well known for dedicated hosting. i've always known them to have great reseller accounts and good for shared hosting but never bothered to check up on their dedicated packages.

anyway, i'm with servint. support is topnotch and haven't had any problems, but definitely less bang for buck then hostgator. i'll stick with them a few more months, then when i outgrow my vps i'll consider a switch to hostgator.
