I killed our ability to send mail from our site. Desperate for help!
Posted 17 years 10 months ago
Not sure when or what happened but no mail is getting out of our web server.
I have retraced my steps and the only recent changes were my addition of the a module for slide show pro. I tried un-publishing this with the same results.
I'm using SMTP and pointing to an internal server that is working just fine. In fact my testing server running Joomla can send mail and has the exact same settings and server. When I complete the stock contact us form I get the following errors:
"Make sure the form is completed and valid" and in the background I see two lines that say "Warning: fputs(): supplied argument is not a valid stream resource in /var/www/includes/phpmailer/class.smtp.php on line 146" and the same text with fgets and line 1024
I checked the class.smtp.php file and nothing looks out of place.
After almost three days of messing around with this issue I figured I check with the best here at RT and see if anyone has some ideas.

Yes i did and that also did not work. I have since killed sendmail and I'm hosting the site on my internal server.
Are there any error logs that I can check?

I seriously doubt this is a Joomla problem.. more than likely a hosting issue.. ask you host to look into it further.
I hope it helps.

Yes you are correct it had nothing to do with Joomla or RT but I was desperate for help. In the end I installed postfix, set joomla to use sendmail, gave my server a FQDN -I think still don't really understand the domain and host names completely even after reading an excellent article
linuxhelp.blogspot.com/2005/09/understan...name-system-dns.html
-rebooted and mail started showing up in my inbox. What really perplexes me is that smtp was working fine and then died. In any case hope this helps someone in the future and thanks for this wonderful community!

Good work! Glad you got it sorted. I've never seen this problem before, but installing an alternative MTA was a good idea.

Okay, I'm dumb as a post where it comes to theses things, but is there any chance that the cache was the problem?
I know of a situation where a users inbox was so jampacked it stuffed up the server.
Anyhow, I'm probably waaaay off base, best of luck to you.
Cheers!

Some where near the end of my ordeal I thought of this as well cleared the cache but to no avail. Something happened to my server an auto update -does Ubuntu do those kind of things? -or I my have got hacked or I just broke something.
