Nationbuilder and/or Joomla

  • Nationbuilder and/or Joomla

    • Hi - I have been working on a campaign web site for my brother. I have done this totally for free, plus provided free hosting. It took me a lot of time to do this since I am no Joomla whiz. The site is http://garyport2011.com/ .

Now people are surrounding him said that we should "incorporate" nationbuilder http://nationbuilder.com/ . From what I can tell - Nationbuilder is a totally separate content management system. And I have no familiarity with it. It seems that I would have to rebuild the entire web site from scratch. Even worse - I wouldn't have Rockettheme to make me look like a pro!

Has anyone worked with it? Am I correct that it a totally separate CMS - and there is no way to incorporate it into Joomla. Can Joomla with extensions do the same thing? I am ready to throw in the towel and give up at the moment. Very frustrating. Thanks in advance for any help.

    • It's a separate commercial CMS.

There's no way to 'incorporate' it with Joomla.

Seems really focused on building support for candidates, soliciting donations, etc... really specialized, not free, and very limited bunch of extensions.

With 7609 Joomla extensions available at this point extensions.joomla.org/ (mostly free with some commercial extensions) I would say 'YES' you could probably meet or surpass whatever this CMS has to offer.

But, if there is not a specific extension available to suit your needs, you could probably have one customized to do what you need at a fraction of the cost of the other options available at NationBuilder.

IMHO, ignore the naysayers and stick with Joomla.

    • Thank you JEM. I will likely stick with Joomla if I have a say in the matter, which I may not. If not, then they will have to find someone else to design it - because without Rockettheme it will look pretty bad if I do it. Thankfully my brother is about Open source and believes in CMS's like Joomla. How does one find someone to customize an extension to meet the needs for the web site? Thanks again.

    • Well, you'd start by going here extensions.joomla.org/ and searching for a component you want, calendar, contact form, photo gallery, video player, etc., etc..

(There's a menu with categories on the left side, and of course, you can use the search feature. )

99% of the time, you'll find exactly what you are looking for (after testing several components :D ).

If you can't find one, or you find one that almost suits your needs, you can:

      A) Contact the developer for support (maybe a simple fix, or for a fee)
      B) For paid support, post a request here www.rockettheme.com/forum/index.php?f=175&rb_v=viewforum , or someplace like www.joomlancers.com/ for someone to code or recode an extension for you.

But to tell you the truth, using Joomla for over five years, I've only had to do so once or twice.

I don't know what your specific needs are at this point, but I am almost certain that you can find the extensions you are looking for on the JED.

90% are free, and even if you need to use a commercial one (and they are usually inexpensive) you should be able to get away with not having to have something custom coded.
    • Thanks,

    • Thanks again JEM. I'll hopefully be able to find what I need in the Joomla Extensions. However, I pretty much left it with my brother as Joomla or find someone else familiar with NationBuilder. So far no one has direct experience with it and I can't see example web sites using it which makes it hard to discover what extensions I can use. So I may have a challenge.

It is good to know I can ask here about customizing an extension. That is completely way beyond what I can do. Thank you so much for your help!
