Help -- Need eCommerce Solution and a Web Developer to Help Build it
Posted 17 years 10 months ago
Hi,
I used joomla to build a website (
www.breslow.com
) and I absolutely loved it. And I am super grateful for all the awesome help I received from this club along the way.
Now I have another website that we are building that will be more than CMS, it needs to have a shopping cart and take credit cards, etc... I started with a developer who is using osCommerce as the base for the solution and then is customizing it from there. Unfortunately this guy is a total flake. I have to wait literally a week or more between any iterations. He never delivers anything anywhere near to when he says he will and I am just about fed up and willing to walk away from our deposit. He has until the end of this week to deliver something substantial before we drop him for someone reliable.
I really like Joomla and the ease in which a non-technical user can add/manage content. But I would like someone to help us build a more dynamic data-driven ecommerce website. We are already 2 months behind schedule, so we also need someone who can help us make up for lost time. We have a log and all the product images and product content (for the most part), and need someone to help create a killer design/template, develop top seller widgets and other selling web parts plus a few other customized pieces of functionality.
If you are interested in helping, please reply to this thread and we can talk from there. I have a spec I can forward that has a lot more detail. FYI, the website will be selling products to women, so you'd need to be able to help create a design that would appeal to a feminine audience.

I did take a look at it, mainly through reading posts on this and other sites, and the feedback wasn't all that positive. That said, it doesn't much matter to me as long as the results are good.
I think this post is more about finding a person to help than the platform - if I find someone who is really good and they want to use virtuemart, than that is completely fine with me.
Conversely, it may make more sense to find someone who really knows osCommerce in the event we can use the stuff already developed for us and just finish it.

I am a Joomla fan, but the reality of it is, OSC is probably a better choice for what you want to do. Business is business and that is the OSC focus.
Joomla is a CMS, VM is an addon. It's a great one, works well. Joomla is mid-phase to its next release and VM will probably be a little further behind that.
There are plenty of professional OSC templates sites out there, just search around a bit. Some of them have great looking sharp templates. Probably costs less than you're paying your developer, some have customization services available.
If it was me, I'd do the OSC thing. New releases will be specifically for that product and you don't have as many variables, the support is there, etc.
Note: While you are in the early stages, you may want to look at Zencart. OSC and Zencart are the same thing as Mambo/Joomla. Same base code, then they forked it up. Some devs went the OSC fork, some went the Zencart fork. Resources are available for both, up to you to decide.

I believe Joomla and VM are still a viable solution.. Joomla on the CMS side can be as complicated or as simple as you want them as far as content goes.. SO if you mainly want a shop with hardly any content I don't see why you would "have" to go with OSC.. Nothing against OSC.. In fact I've used it before on site's I've done.. But if you want to be able to add content as well.. Quickly and easily.. I say Joomla and VM would be they way to go still
