    • I can't praise Servint enough, but speed has never been a concern for me... in these parts of the world the average net connection is 256kbps ADSL so the bottleneck is on the connections anyway... a VPS from anywhere would load about the same.

Servint = supperb support, really really really stable servers (as in 30mins of downtime in the almost 2yrs i've been there... and scheduled 10days in advance)

ThePlanet is supposedly(i've never used them) a little faster, but you need to know your way around a server because there isn't much hand-holding (so i'm told).

Note here that since we're talking about VPS's or dedicated machines, the speed of the server is not a concern... you pay more, you get more. The speed would then be determined by the uplink from the datacenters and the distance (and corresponding latency over the wire) between the datacenter and the end user.

If a site is image/video heavy (like Franck's), distance has a noticeable effect... so it's smart for him to have his server in the US where i'd imagine most of his visitors are from. For normal brochure sites like most of us develop, I really don't think it matters whether the server is across the pond from wherever you are.

Also love the servint forum... like RT, it's a treasure trove of info. You'll meet the guy who developed the script mentioned in the first post in this thread there, as well as the developer of the configserver scripts (which RT uses as well.).

      Good stuff.

    • Post a tracert as they might have a peering issue with a euro provider.
I have sent them this type of info before as this is a common issue with any provider.

I agree, it's very good to be contacted several days before the maintenance of the server!

Never used ThePlanet directly but used a dedicated on Hostgator (ThePlanet) before ServInt. It was needed 2 minutes to load the main page of my website!!! and their engineers didn't solve the problem in 3 weeks. It was a NIGHTMARE for me and my visitors!!! So, ServInt helped me in diferent ways to save my business.

ServInt can offer exactly what I need and for a very good price. The bandwithd cost is for me a lot better than Amazon s3 for example.
