Different home page per user group?

  • Different home page per user group?

    • Some of the information on my site is about local events. I would like users to be able to be able to view information about events in their region on the home page. I've learned that asking for help on this forum often includes requests for more details, so I'm going to try to spell out as much as possible here.

      QUESTIONS/PROBLEMS:

      1a. could some of the information on the home page be user-group specific?

      1b. how could I make it so the Home item on the menu linked back to the right home page for this user?

      2a. could I have different user groups based on user-selected geographical regions (the user chooses to be in the Boulder group, Denver group, or Orlando group)?

      2b. could I auto-configure which informaton appears on the home page based on the user's USA zip code? (in this scenario, the user wouldn't choose to be in the Orlando group, they would just be assigned there because their zip code was close)

      3. I assume I must have a default page for Guests (which I hope encourages them to register)

      Here are some of the ideas I'm bouncing around:

      a. subdomains for home pages such as denver.mydomainname.com and bayarea.mydomainname.com, these would be references to pages that don't end as index.php (might be denver.php for example). But how would I make sure that the users landed on the home page that was correct for their region, and could continue to get there with the Home item in the main menu?

      b. I've heard Community Builder has a feature for personalized home pages, I don't think this is what I want. I think my situation is more Group/Region based, not individual home pages.

      c. The events I'm posting could all be part of the same section (e.g. Denver events is one section, Bay Area events is another section) The type of events could be the categories belonging to that section.

      d. Some of the event information would fit a calendar system, most would not.

      Please advise with solutions you think would best fit my situation. Thank you so much, your effort and input are appreciated.
      p.s. I'm oscillating between Colormatic and Versatility III but I don't think the template choice affects my solution. If so, tell me so.

    • Saliba...you may want to post this on the Joomla forums too. Also, did you search the Joomla forums? I thought I had seen something on this before somewhere.

    • Yep, posted there too, as a "me too" on someone who posted earlier with no response. No replies for half a day, so I figured I'd post here since I really need this framework in place before launching the site. If I get a solution here, I'll post it there.

      I also did quite a lot of searching last night. There is something about Jacl's but I don't think it'll solve the home problem. So I'm hoping to reach an expert here. Also, I see the notes about CB having individual home pages, but I've got to imagine someone has solved the user group / home page problem.

      Hoping for an technical angel to show the way....

    • Forgive me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't rokaccess do pretty much what you want to do?
      Thread about rokaccess

      Cheers!

    • I'm not sure.

      RokAccess is cool, here are the examples listed...

      {rokaccess guest}shows only to guest users{/rokaccess}
      {rokaccess !guest}shows to all users who are not a guest{/rokaccess}
      {rokaccess registered}shows to all users who are registered{/rokaccess}
      {rokaccess guest,!editor}shows to all guests and members who are NOT editors{/rokaccess}
      {rokaccess editor,special}shows to editors, administrators, and superadministrators{/rokaccess}

      but it is specific that the user groups are all the "usual" ones, do you (or anyone) think it would be possible to use rokaccess and jaclplus together so that I can make certain content appear for "orlando user group" and other content appear for "denver user group"?

      thank you again

    • Looks like a there's a new extension that could be the secret sauce...

      "JUGA is Joomla component that allows you additional control over what content is available to which users. It is NOT A HACK (like JACL); JUGA installs and uninstalls *easily* as a component. To activate/de-activate it, install and publish/unpublish the JUGA module. After installing JUGA, merely synchronize it's table with your site's components and content. Then, define which items each group has access to. After assigning users to JUGA groups, activate the module and voila!"

      extensions.joomla.org/component/option,c...t_id,1782/Itemid,35/

      I'm going to hold off just a little to see more reviews come in, but this is very exciting.
