Moving Content, but Not Cloning

    • Hey guys, I'm in the process of moving away from the crappy host I currently use, and have decided to take the opportunity to do a little re-design on my site. I'm wondering if there is perhaps a nice, easy method to back up my content, user info, and SMF forum posts without actually doing a full clone of my current site.

I may be missing something, or perhaps my weakness with MySQL is showing quite a bit, but I would really love a nudge in the right direction.

      Thanks!

    • perhaps you can do this by just exporting the jos_content tables from the existing site and importing them into your new db.

IF you decide to try that, be sure to back up both sites first.

hopefully somebody else here knows a more elegant solution or can at least confirm whether my suggestion works.

    • Some hosts will migrate you site for free. You might want to check into that. I don't want to plug a specific host, but this forum www.webhostingtalk.com/ does have what appear to be unbiased opinions from the readers. After going through there I made some choices I'm now very happy with. Just wish I found this earlier.

<edit> ooops, sorry, didn't understand you post until I re-read it. Nope, I don't know of anything off hand. Other than do the migration, delete what you don't want and save the rest.

    • I'm curious why you wouldn't want to use JoomlaCloner?
I have bought it, but haven't used it to move a site yet.

      Cheers!

So am I. A redesign of your site has no effect on your content or anything else. Why not just clone the site and then change the template and move modules around. Thats about as far as you can go to "redesign" the site :) , and there's less chance of something going wrong.

I would only do what you want to do if I'd been hacked and couldn't be bothered going through every folder in joomla looking for files malicious scripts hidden by the hackers. Of course such scripts could be hidden in the db too, but it's just one of many steps that can be taken. but i digress.. i'm curious thats all :)

    • I wanted to rebuild my site from scratch (for several reasons mostly due to mistakes made during my initial learning curve). I've actually already done so, and am now looking to get my userlist and content (and preferably forum posts) over to the new site.

If I can figure out how to merge an imported database with an existing one (like jos_users) and have it work, I'll be on my way. Unfortunately, it looks like ID numbers are going to give me a headache now.... whee.

It will probably be easier to ask my users to re-register....
