    • Hi,

I am currently thinking of upgrading my PC, and I was told my a friend to go out and get an Apple Mac. Now I have used Mac's before and liked what I say but can people give their reason for and against, I have roughly about £3000 to spend :)

      Thanks
      Danny

    • Get a Mac. You can still buy a PC with the change.

    • once you get one you'll never turn back!

Mac users really annoyed me - the way they all promote macs as though they're on commission and the smug way they think macs are superior - then I ended up having to get one through an old job and er well I'm doing the promoting & get that smug sensation each time I watch a nasty powerpoint presentation or see someone cursing at their windows pc crashing :)

      Reasons for:

      - You'll save a ton of time not having to bother with maintenance & virus issues
      - Everything looks nicer - much more pleasant to use

      Reasons against

      - with your budget none at all! You can even boot windows on a new mac (but why would you go & do that?! :P )

    • what are they like for games thou?

Also do you not need a firewall or an anti-virus with a Mac?

      Thanks for the replies

    • I haven't played any games - I know you can get them but I can't vouch for how good they are - you can always just boot up windows on an intel mac anyhow.

I've never used a firewall or antivirus and been using macs for 3 years now

    • I am considering getting an ibook for my next pc, but I don't really want to have to buy all my software again...

e.g. fireworks etc. For Mac. That is the one thing holding me back.

If you are any kind of serious gamer, you will want to get a PC. End of story.

I would think that any online connection ought to be using a firewall. OSX has a built in one if I recall correctly, I'm not sure if it is enabled by default.

Keep in mind that if you switch from a pc to a mac you will have to re-purchase all of the software that you use.

Not trying to dissuade you from a Mac, just telling it as I see it. I hope to get a Mac one day, to use in conjunction with my pc's - however I will have to budget a lot of money for hardare AND software.

      Cheers!

Not always ;) For eg, Adobe: You can contact them and obtain in some cases a Mac license for software you previously purchased for PC. This is a fact.. I am sure some other companies will also allow this.. after all, you are not breaking the license, merely just changing the OS it runs on.

    • Hi,

concerning the software. There is no difference between buying a MAC or a new PC. If you want to use the software on more than one computer it has to be bought a second time anyway. I switched from PC to MAC two years ago. One piece of software convinced me to do it. It is Parallels. Parallels is a virtual machine. All you need is Parallels and a Windows XP license. In the virtual machine, you are able to install and use your old Windows programs until you have to update them to perhaps a native MAC version.

A new MacBook Pro or iMac should also be enough to play modern games.
