    • Actually I just read all of the posts here and can anyone offer advice as to why one would choose mac if you were making the decision based on productivity instead of viruses? Viruses can be over come but I would love to know what applications are available on mac only that really increase your productivity. No doubt macs are sexy. but are they worth 3k for someone that already has a decent laptop and just WANTS a mac? ;-)

And Stephen... i got a new laptop from best buy as a warranty exchange (old sony vaio crapped out on me). It is a 17" Intel duo core HP running XP (Media) with 2GB of memory. I got it 5 months ago or thereabouts and so it is a 1.6GHz processsor. At the time it was selling for 1399.00USD. The Macs are now similarly speced except with a 2.4GHz chip (same memory, similar dvd drive, a little higher resolution) except they sell for 2800USD! Yikes.... 2x as much for the difference between 1.6 and 2.4...

but man are they sexy.... ;-)

actually dont take that jab the wrong way as I like macs. I want to own one... i just havent figured out a way to justify the expenditure just yet. Anyone want to help me?

    • That's a big question and i'm sure you'll get a variety of responses, but for me it comes down to this: productivity and usability are two sides of the same coin. Usability is directly tied to design, not just of the exterior box, but of the OS. Taken together, that's the house you're living and working in. If you choose to live in a house where you're constantly hitting your head on the ceiling because it's too low or tripping over the floor because it's uneven, that is likely to affect your productivity. I have no doubt that there are people who will disagree with me, but this is the heart of it for me in my experience. And for me, I do better work and enjoy my work more when I'm in a 'house' I like -- one that works with me rather than against me, one that inspires enjoyment and fun rather than it just being a place I have to be.

    • Natalie I totally agree with you. I just dont have enough experience with Mac to know that it is a better house. I know I would have to keep my current set-up as there are items that I run on windows that I would still need to take care of. Usability is big with me but 10 years as a somewhat capable poweruser on PCs makes me a little worried about switching. But Vista is the biggest reason why i would consider. I hate that OS. man what a resource pig.

    • I never thought I would say it, but I am considering switching too.

I do recommend you check out the screencastsonline.com video tutorials as Don, the guys who makes them really shows you how to use the Mac, OS X Tiger and some of the more popular apps and utilities. You can get a really good feel for how it all works before you even get close to a Mac...

    • That's an interesting link, phlux. Good reference.

re: your question, Marcus, to a certain extent it is a personal question. It sounds like you'd have to take the plunge to really answer the concerns you have. Short of buying a mac and getting your head into it really, there's the screencastonline.com tutorials, but alternatively maybe you could borrow a mac from a friend or rent one for a week.. Not sure what to tell you there. Have you gone to an Apple store to look at/play with the models you'd be interested in? There will always be new/different things to get used to when you switch, and probably the occasional frustration until you figure out what's where.

I think one of the things I've always appreciated about Apple products is that they don't take it as a base assumption that fun and productivity are incompatible. That's evident in the design of Apple products and in a lot of the Apple elements that people have previously considered "frivolous" -- hence the stereotype of mac users as not being "hard core" or "serious". Personally, that attitude has never bothered me, because i know I do better work when i'm also having fun. :)

      HEHE

Well, I've owned a Mac since 1984. I'm currently on my 15th Mac.

However, because of the hardware architecture, the more advanced PC games will not well work on the Mac. Notice that I said 'well'. Some will not work at all.

I think that Apple is trying to work the kinks out on this, but for now, you'll need a PC - unless you have a console system.

To be truthful, I was looking at the lower end of the laptops. However, there may be other differences that you didn't take into account (I can't know), which may or may not matter to you. What wireless protocol did the HP have? The Macs have the 802.11n standard. Does the HP have a built in webcam? Built in Bluetooth support? Illuminated keyboard? Remote control? Firewire Ports? What kind of video card? Gigabyte Networking? It may also be that the monitor resolution of the HP is more comparable to that of the 15 inch screen on the Mac. Resolution is a fairer comparison than screen size in my book. (I would rather have a more portable smaller screen with greater resolution--I'm amazed how small print these middle aged eyes can read on a higher resolution Mac monitor compared to less expensive monitors). Now consider the difference in Processor Speed when combined with these features. Did I mention the iLife software?

These differences (if they exist and suspect many of them do) may or may not matter to you. Just something to consider in the equation.

Still looking for that bargain PC laptop as I am developing a love of linux! I'd rather not have to spend 1000 for a MacBook, but I really don't see any better alternative. I don't need all the features of the MacBook, but I don't want a hobbled second rate machine either.
