    Email Addresse on websites

    Posted 13 years 5 months ago
    • I know many many moons ago everyone put their email address on their websites. Then came the barrage of Spams as bots scraped the web for email addresses. So we fought back with forms so email addresses could be kept safe but visitors could still contact us. Now we have powerful spam filters on our email accounts that are capable of stopping most of the spam to make managing it more...well, manageable.

      So my question is, do I tell my customers that it is OK to put your email address on their web site or do I need to go to the effort of hiding it behind some code so bots can not get to it?

      My contention is, put it up. Make it easy for your visitors, my spam filter will take care of the spam.

      What are you practicing when building your sites and waht tools are you using to hide the email addresses from would be bots?

      Many thanks,
      Houston

    • I still use forms for most of my sites but not all. I think it is OK to use the email address with Joomla because go the email address cloaking plugin that is part of the core install

    • Not sure what that means. I found this but when I put the code into RokPad it displays as is on the page and not as an email address.
      echo JHtml::_('email.cloak', 'charris@hhdulaw.com');

      Can this not be called within a article? Seems like this is where it would be used the most.

    • OK, I see what you are referring to now. This is a plugin that needed to be turned on. I have turned it on but now when ever there is the "mailto:" code the browser displays the message:
      This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

      Javascript is on.
