Joomla noob - please be gentle

    • Hi all

I've been working on a site using Versatility iii as the basis for the template and have uploaded a demo version of the site to here:

      http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/

As you will see I have modified the theme a little, but only by changing colours/fonts used in the css or the graphics themselves, but overall this is still using the main template for the theme - I have basic knowldge of CSS etc. and know my way around Photoshop ;)

I have managed to link other sections of the site together and am finding the backend great to work with, although knowing me there will probably be a much easier/better way of doing things!

There are a couple of issues I can't seem to resolve, probably due to my lack of knowledge of Joomla (tbh, I'm used to the dark side >>> FLASH ;) - and joomla is new to me) so any help appreciated

      Challenge 01

On the homepage I can't get rid of these messages that you can see here http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/images/1.jpg

      Challenge 02

If I use the main menu, and click on the top link (level 1 of the navigation i.e. ABOUT) then even though I have text to go in place for this section it won't display although you can see the title of the section as in this picture http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/images/2.jpg and as you can see there is still the "No images" part there...

or it will display like this http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/images/3.jpg and as before there is content to be viewed, which, if going by how I made the other menu links work, "should" in theory display the pages content?

For example I added an extra link into the navigation top level for "workouts" and made it a child (just as a test as this is not how I want the navigation to work) and the content displays such as here http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=46&Itemid=91 , albeit with the annoying little "No images" message from challene 01

      Challenge 03

ALT tags on the main (large ones at the top) images display as the filename i.e. where.jpg - is there any way to change this?

      Challenge 04

I can't get the Slimbox module to work at all even though it is installed (at least I think it is? http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/images/4.jpg ).

Page in question would be like this one http://www.powerzonegym.net/gym/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=27&Itemid=66

I have read the help pages on the demo site for the theme and would appreciate it if anyone can help me with an eezy peezy japaneezy for dummies version of how to get it to work?

Apologies for so many question with my first post but I've been pulling out what little hair I have left trying to fix the points above with no success

Thanks in advance to all who have read this far

      :)

    • OK - defiantely not an expert here but I've a couple of ideas for you -

The No images - I would hink that you have got something installed (perhaps the slimbox) that is not finding any images. The screenshot you posted for slimbox was the Mambot manager not the Module manager. What settings have you got for the Slimbox Module? ( I don't use it myself so I don't know what they would need to be) Maybe try unpublishing the slimbox module and see if that error goes away. Otherwise, do you have any other modules published that may beprodcing this error?

Challenge 2 - Not sure what you are trying to do here, or what is/isn't working - trying the site it all seems to be OK?

Challenge 3 - Alt tags - depends how you add the images to the content item. If you're using the insert image mambot I'm not sure - probably in the image preferences somewhere, underneath where you add the images to the content item. Other options are wysiwyg editiors, I use JCE which has an integrated image manager which allows me to upload images as I go and set the alt tags and sizes etc.

Challenge 4 - I think you are getting mambots and modules mixed up, the screenshot you show is for mambots not modules, you will need the module as well.

    • 1# This error appears with no content on the frontpage, you need frontpage content

3# You can manually add alt tags in HTML mode

4# Have you installed the mambot?

    • Hi,

      Many thanks for your replies

I have managed to fix some of these via your advice and research on the joomla.org site as well

Here's a breakdown of what I actually did wrong in case anyone else has similar problems

      Challenge 01

The no images thing was caused by not having turned off a random image mod - all of the top images use this mod and i simply point them to separate folders for the different sections

what i did: look for the problem module and then turned it off

lesson learned: check everything that isnt meant to be on is actually off ::)

The 2nd point of this was the no items to display was caused by what James S! had said - the content was actually there, it just wasn't published to the front page :-[

      Challenge 02

The menu now works as I want it to at the top

The problem I had was the original menu links at the top (i.e. about, history etc.), wouldn't display the content for the section and resulted in no content being displayed

what i did: read info on the joomla forum, came back to the site even more confused ;D, then deleted everything in my menu, cleared all my trash, rebuilt the menu and for some reason...it worked....confused? not 1/2 as much as i was as I didn't do anything different at all ???

lesson learned: if at first you don't succeed, RTFM then try, try again ;)

      Challenge 03

I still don't have a solution for this but I think it may be because I am using the random image mod? I am unsure if this is correct or if there is anything that can be done about it

what i did: scratched my head and frowned a lot

lessons learned: head scratching and frowning doesn't make you think any better so it's sometimes better to ask again :D

      Challenge 04

Still no further ahead with this

what i did: although it appeared that I had installed the mambot/module, after following the advice on this thread, i then uninstalled it and tried reinstalling

this time around got an error message and am in process of getting ready to attempt this again

lessons learned: if it aint working doesnt mean its broke, and is possibly due to most of the above... my ignorance of the system

anyway, thanks for the help so far with this

      :)

    • Cool site , =)

Cheers Spillblood ;), I also did the photography for it as well so that's been fun too

I resolved Challenge 04 by giving up with the slimbox thing - couldn't get it to install at all for some reason(?) and purchased Simple Image Gallery PRO from another site which went in after 2 attempts (mostly due to my lack of knowledge ::) again with the system) and it is (appears to be) working fine which has left me confused again as to why i couldn't get first one going? :-\

It's been a little bit of a learning curve away from Flash, but I think I've nearly got there in the end, only thing left is the issue with ALT tags while using a random image but for now it will do :)
