Getting Rid of Columns

Hi,
I have a table of all the content of a category, but with everything hidden but the date and the name
This means that the date is on the left of the page, and the item is half way (as there is columns for date and item)
How can I join them up like this:
Friday 13th August, 2007 - An Item
Instead of:
Friday 13th August 2007 An Item
Do you see what I mean

Make sure the cell widths are correct, and the cell alignment.
