Need help - advert & user areas?

Being a bit of a newbie - could someone point me in the direction of a tutorial or give a explanation of how the advert and user areas in the template work?
I need to place different advertising on each page of the site and not sure what to do. Plus I need to advert 1, 2, & 3 across the top of the page.
I changed the positions in Template Manager - Module Positions, but when I look at Preview with inline positions it does not reflect the change.

Sure - thanks - the website is www.theairportauthority.com which provides info to private pilots at small airports. We need to sell advertising for each airport.
The colormatic template has advert1, 2, 3, user1, 2, 3 and banner positions.
1 - I am not clear on how these areas work in Joomla - for advert and user - do I create unique modules for each advertisement and assign to the specific pages? The ads we are selling will be in the same positions on each page and the same size.
2. How does the banner module work? Is there specific documentation on that? I have found some general stuff.

Alan, I like what you are doing with the site. You might want to take a look at this:

It might make what you are trying to do a bit easier.
