Upgrading from J1.5. Is 3.0 ready for primetime?

Posted 12 years 4 months ago
    • I'm migrating a large, feature heavy site from Joomla 1.5. A couple of months ago, RT developers and the Joomla.org boards were recommending that most stick with J.2.5 until Fall 2013 when it reaches J3.5. Is that still the recommendation? I'm seeing that all the extensions needed for this site are J3.0 compatible and most theme developers including RT are supporting 3.0. Either way, we're looking forward to front end and back end ACL controls and responsive designs that 2.5 and 3.0 offer - especially ACL.. Given that the site is running an unsupported version of Joomla (1.5.26) and an upgrade is needed, which should I go use?

    • I recommend going to 2.5 as 3.0 is a Standard Term Support. 2.5 is going to be around for a while unlike 3.0.

    • I'd also stay 2.5 for now too. I have a couple sites in similar situations and we decided to croos that bridge using 2.5.

    • You should think of 3.0 as a late beta or Release Candidate.

It's ok to use at home but for a production site i'm not so sure...

    • 3 warnings? That'll do for me. We'll go with J2.5 for our client's site migration and use J3.0 for our company's portfolio site. I'll site is pretty basic and small enough to manage the new version and if challenges occur, we won't risk a client relationship.
