Articles and News in replicant: Text Layout

This is probably due to the fact that I am brand new to joomla. I am using Replicant and want to be able to add articles and News items by categories (Eg. Sport, Music, Interviews, etc.)-
I also want to have the possibility for a registered user to be able to submit a news item that upon approval by admin will be published- I want a very slick looking layout as in RocketTheme news oriented themes.
Can you suggest me ways to achieve that? Do I need to get additional components ? I am happy with Replicant, but struggling with the text layout part- Please send me ideas and pointers, or if you can help me for an hour or two, send me a private message
