I am working on a clients website - they are a mobile locksmith and they have a main central website but they are working in different locations in the local area and depending on which area they are advertising in they want the domain to be different:
The only thing that will change in terms of content of these sites will be the front-page welcome information and there will be different banners shown on each site depending on the area, all the rest of the site content will remain the same.
The question I have, should I use the Joomla Multi-Sites component (seems pretty annoying to configure) or just point the subdomains to a home page for a section/area article?

Regardless of SEO guidelines, I've seen this technique work. I'm not saying it's a good idea, or it's future proof, I'm just saying test theories before blindly accepting them.
If you're doing it for a site and nobody else is optimising for locality, you'll probably still win.

If I were doing this job, I would create a page of content for each region. I would use tagging, or a dropdown list to separate the various regions. Maybe even a form with redirect functions.
But I wouldn't build a separate site unless it were 80% different content-wise.
