PHPbb3 question: is member-only access possible

I'm looking at adding PHPbb3 to my user account for an upcoming project. We are planning a paid-member based Joomla site with a member restricted PHPbb3 message board. RT makes it easy to get a consistent look across the 2 platforms. And there are great extensions for paid membership access.
Question is whether it would be possible/easy to tie PHPbb3 login to Joomla site and would ir be possible to restrict non-paid members from having access to the message boards.
Being unfamiliar with PHPbb3 and how it can be paired with Joomla, I want a little direction before taking this on.

- You can set it up like that, but you will have to set all the ACL settings correct, for joomla as well as for phpbb3. Creating groups that have restricted access in both.
