    Joomla 2.5 or 3.0?

Posted 11 years 11 months ago
    • Hello,

I'm a member of Rockettheme since a long time but there is a long time too that I don't create a new site. I currently manage a site builded with Joomla 1.5 and I think it's time to create a new version.
However, i don't know what is better to start, Joomla 2.5 or Joomla 3.0
I think there is a lot of difference between the two CMS but I really don't know what is the best to start now. Will Joomla 2.5 will be supported for a long time by Joomla.org or Joomla 3.0 is the way to go now?

      Thx for any advice

    • Hi Blue Maroo, thanks a lot for for your reply and the link! The informations helped me to know principally the time frame of the joomla development but infortunately this doesn't help me to choose the version I have to use to build my site at this moment... Joomla 3.1 and 3.5 are coming, so what solution will be more easy at the end? make a migration from Joomla 2.5 to 3.5 or start now with 3.0 to update to 3.1 and 3.5? It's hard for me to know what is the most easy solution.
I have to take a decision this week!

    • Your decision also depends on what extensions you are running.

Currently, as you are, all my sites are running J1.5.26, but are getting a bit long in the tooth.

I need 5 extensions for each site, all are J2.5 ready, four are J3.0 ready.

I am waiting for the fifth one to be ready before I take the plunge.

In the interim, I will be testing J3.0/3.1 on local host or in a sub directory or sub domain of my site.

I suggest you do the same to familiarize yourself with J3.xx as it will have the longest life at this point.

    • Just my general opinion...

J! 3.0 doesn't bring much to the table. It makes sense to build with 3.x because it will be hassle free migration from that point on (something they promised in 2.5), but 3.0 just isn't ready for primetime. Developers don't prioritize support for 3.0 because even Joomla doesn't recommend it for production.

And the feature benefits are marginal. I have a really hard time finding anything about 3.0 I can't do without.

I'm building all new sites with 2.5.

    • Hi guys, thanks a lot for your advices! Well, I finally decided to create the brand new site with Joomla 3.0 because the longer support and easy updates updates (I hope!!) and I just need a few extensions.
For another site that I own for several years now and currently using Joomla 1.5 I'm starting a migration to Joomla 2.5 because I need the Solar Sentinel template not yet available for Joomla 3.0.

      Thx!
