Splitting a site into two sections

  • Splitting a site into two sections

    • I'm having trouble finding info on the pros and cons of setting up a site that tries to separate the two different products offered by a single firm. For example, say you have a law firm that does very different types of work: business law and bankruptcy.

The people coming to you for bankruptcy aren't going to be interested in your business offerings, and may even be turned off if they perceive "business" as part of the reason they are in trouble. On the other hand, the business people don't want to see a lot of into about bankruptcy info when they come to your site.

Sure, you could make two separate sites, but then you split your SEO and it's twice as much work to build and maintain.

What I'm thinking is that the homepage basically offers a choice between the two products, then you are sent to that section of the site, with it's own menu that is devoted primarily to what you're interested in.

Any opinions on this? I'd particularly be interested in reading some articles or studies dealing with this kind of situation.

    • If you have the homepage set up the way you are going to set it up then there is zero hiding place for your concerns .. as in whenever they visit, they're going to know the firm does both things.

As for SEO if you're optimising for say business law and bankruptcy on the same domain name, you could argue you are diluting one with the other ..

But if you were to have daniels-and-daniels-business-law.com and daniels-and-daniels-bankruptcy-law.com each of those domain names would be perfectly optimised for exactly what it is they are doing ..

and i dont think it is wrong .. i actually think that is what you've got to do, if you dont want perception that they are a jack of all trades and better still, if you're doing this for a customer, yes the work is increased, but you bill for your work anyway ..

    • There are versioning extensions on JED, but I've never used any of them.

I really think you should stick to one site. Make your home page very simple with two icons (one for each area of specialization).

Then (like Ben recommends) create a category page with it's own specific modules for Business Law and another specific page with it's own specific modules for Bankruptcy Law. For this you could use J!core or a CCK like K2.
Use This for easier module management.

You should have different domains (like damo suggested) pointed to the appropriate pages.

      And you should use sh404sef.

I think building one site to function like two may take longer, but you'll make up for it with less upkeep.
